OK, worst subtitle ever. But who saw it this weekend?

I did, of course, and...wow. I'm still kinda recovering. I cried like a baby, naturally, and people in my theatre literally screamed during the scene where >>Precious comes home from the hospital with Abdul, and she and Mary fight and she falls down the steps and Mary drops a TV on her. ...That even looks fucked up typed out.<< I thought the performances were great basically across the board, and I liked the way the tension and the drama shifted back and forth (like, it wasn't just 'sad, sad, sad, happy, the end.' It was more up and down), and I cannot BELIEVE I'm typing these words, but I want Mo'Nique to be nominated for an Oscar. Mo'Nique. Oscar. Yeah, looks weird. But I dislike it when actors are nominated for just crying and being over the top, but her scene >>at the end with Ms. Weiss when she was describing Precious' father starting to abuse her, and her voice was shaking and she was trying to explain and keep it together...seriously, wow.<< I was blown away.

Thoughts?

I'm reading the book now and I'm hoping the movie will play here soon. The book is absolutely brutal but I still want to see this.

I have always thought Monique was talented, so I'm not shocked she could bring it. I am bummed she has been in a snit about the promotion of the film, but again not surprised, I am shocked they're marketing this at what now amounts to Christmas time, but I think the marketing has been appropriately up front about the hardcore themes, so yeah I'm prepared for the brutal sadness of it all.

Christmas season coincides with Oscar season, that's the main reason, I'd think.

Gabourey Sidibe has really won me over with all her interviews (especially that line she had about how no, she wasn't some tragic girl until the movie, she was already awesome and then she got the role), and at least what I've seen of her in the trailers and clips I've come across, she's done an excellent job.

I am going to try to see this soon, though I'm not sure who I can convince to go with me (or how).

I do find it disturbing that despite the actual content of the film, so much of the press coverage seems to be about Mo'Nique not promoting it enough or Mariah Carey not wearing makeup as much as anything else.

I read the interview Lee Daniels did for the NYTimes and the corresponding movie review...I was crying reading the move review! I would like to see it but I don't think I will be able to handle this movie. I'll be sobbing all the way home.

Do we know why Mo'Nique's not doing press? I can't find any info.

Supposedly, she wants to be paid to do press for the movie since Oprah signed up as exec producer after the film was made. She did the part for next to nothing and thinks that, since Oprah is loaded, some of that money should be going to her.

I saw this with my BF and he didn't even recognize Mariah Carey, which is not to praise her for being so "raw," but to suggest she might want to wear less makeup from time to time.
