Okay, hoping this is different enough from "unusual reactions to songs" to warrant its own thread. :)

Just in time for Halloween, what are some songs that scare you? Made you run to your room, jump in your bed and pull the covers over your head if it came on the radio when you were a kid?

I have just a few, some of them a little strange.

"The River" - Bruce Springsteen.
"Possum Kingdom" - The Toadies. Totally eerie. Apparently, a lot of people think this song is about becoming a vampire. Which makes The Toadies laugh.
"Toy Soldiers" - Martika. When I was about 11, my dad took me to see (God knows why) Pet Semetary. I didn't sleep for three months afterwards. While we were waiting in the cinema before the movie, this was one of the songs that was played. That song and my post-movie childhood trauma are now inextricably linked.
If I were to hear it now, I would probably have to lay down and put a pillow over my head. :(
"Baker Street" - Gerry Rafferty - I have no idea why this song creeps me out. It must be the sax solo. Again, something weird from my childhood.
"Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" - It was the lyrics, "If you get caught between the moon and New York City..." I took these lyrics literally when I was a kid. I didn't like the idea of being caught between the moon and anything, because then I'd be smushed.
"Moonshadow" - Cat Stevens. See above, re: taking lyrics literally. My dad used to sing this song to me before bed, and I always imagined people losing body parts, bit by bit.

Okay, I know some of these are strange, but this one is downright bizarre, and is kind of cheating because it really belongs in "unusual reactions to songs", but Teddy Bear Picnic freaks me right the fuck out. I'm not even joking. I can't even hum this song without the hairs on the back of my neck standing up pin-straight.

Now I've outed myself as a total and complete nutjob...;)

Not in a Halloween-spooky type sense, but Every Breath You Take has always creeped me out. I don't understand at all how people can find it romantic. He's a stalker!

I totally get this, and I'm a sax player. It's so melancholy, but beautiful. The Foo Fighters do a great cover of this. It always reminds me of long car rides in the dark as a child, laying down in the back of the family station wagon. Other songs that evoke that feeling are Take A Walk on the Wild Side, and Lowdown by Boz Scaggs.

The first time I heard Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donovan was in the movie Zodiac, so for that reason I find it pretty creepy, but I still like the song. The cover by the Butthole Surfers, on the other hand, sounds so scary that I can't stand to listen to it all the way through.

That is not unusual at all. "If you go down to the woods today, you're in for a big surprise/If you go down to the woods today, you'd better wear a disguise." How is that anything but creepy? The music's really eerie-sounding too.

I'd like to second the notion that "Every Breath You Take" is the ultimate stalker song. I hate hearing it played at weddings.

Also, I'd like to add the Beatles' "Run For Your Life." It's even worse because up until that point, Rubber Soul is an absolutely flawless album. Thankfully, it's the last track, so it's easy to pretend it doesn't exist. Because: creepy and scary. And not even that good, especially for them.

I guess it's pretty predictable to say Don't Fear the Reaper, eh?

I always find Enter the Sandman to be kind of creepy, too. I think it's the "Hush little baby, don't say a word, and pay no mind to that noise you heard" line.

Lots of Phish songs have an unsettling vibe. Esther is about an evil Armenian puppet that terrorizes and eventually kills a little girl. It's Ice seems to be about a guy fighting his reflection in the ice, and is scary despite the fact that the bass line is basically "Yakety Sax.

Other creepy Phish songs:

My Friend, My Friend

Rift

The Mango Song

In Dreams by Roy Orbison. It's a beautiful, melancholy song, but has the most creepy, twisted beginning. Of course, David Lynch made it the stuff of nightmares in Blue Velvet, but even on its own it freaks me out, especially since I have clown phobia:

QUOTE
A candy-coloured clown they call the Sandman,
Tip-toes to my room every night
Just to spinkle stardust and to whisper
'Go to sleep, every thing is all right'.

WHY??!!

Red Right Hand by Nick Cave. Also, Country Death Song by the Violent Femmes, which I always thought Nick Cave could probably do a great cover of.

The Man Who Sold the World by David Bowie. It's more the music than the lyrics, but for some reason I find it slightly disturbing to listen to.

Good God, yes, "Revolution No. 9." I used to try to listen to it with headphones on when I was in high school and would occasionally rip the 'phones off because I just couldn't take it any more.

I have always found Nine Inch Nails "Closer" to be incredibly creepy. And, for reasons obvious to anyone who's heard the song, "The Boiler" by Rhoda Dakar and the Bodysnatchers.

Into the Night, by Benny Mardones. I hate this song. "She's just 16 years old. Leave her alone, they say."

Yes. She's SIXTEEN. Creepy old man singing about young girls. Cree. Pee.

Along the same lines, 'Young Girl' by Gary Puckett and The Union Gap. Creepy as hell, especially the fact that the older man is portrayed as being helpless against a teenage temptress.

According to wikipedia, Gary Glitter considered doing a cover of the song.

Add to those "My Sharona" by The Knack, which was written about a real girl. He was 26 or 27, she was 16 when they met.
QUOTE
Come a little closer huh, ah will ya huh.

Fun fact! When I saw Gary Puckett in concert, he dedicated "Young Girl" to his daughter. I have never seen an auditorium get that silent that fast. Hella creepy.

Dean Stockwell singing into a desk lamp! Man, that was one twisted movie.

That Ben, he's so fucking SUAVE!

Asking why with regard to David Lynch is just asking to stare into the abyss.

WHAT.

Okay, songs with this subject matter need to not exist.

You all have mentioned some really good ones. I second the Mad World, and Lullaby.

Also? I did not know that about My Sherona. I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to that song without getting the heebie jeebies ever again. :(
