I just think he has a deep sentimental streak that is mostly restrained but occasionally just hits one note too far. To me the thumbs up and Titanic Heaven are from the same impulse. I like both of those movies a lot but it comes out in these little moments. Especially in his passion projects, which makes me skeptical of Avatar.
