I signed up for Netflix again last week because I was spending Thanksgiving by myself and I needed new movies to see.

I ended up watching The Squid and the Whale, which wasn't ultimately as depressing as I thought it would be, but squickier in some parts, and An Inconvenient Truth, which sort of bored me because I did know nearly all of those statistics before. Probably not the best movies to watch on a holiday.

But I have the film version of I Capture the Castle on the way. Whee, light-hearted fare.

After missing it at the Pittsburgh film festival, I just got to see 49 Up, and it was great. The inteview with Roger Ebert and Michael Apted was a nice addition. It'd be nice if people who dropped out like Peter and Charles would come back, but I don't think that will happen.

I really, really liked that movie and thought it was downright hilarious in some places. Jeff Daniels was brilliant. The main reason I rented it is because Anna Paquin's my favorite actress, but seeing her getting up close and personal with dad from Fly Away Home was pretty strange. But overall I really, really enjoyed it.

A couple of days ago, I watched She's the Man. Seriously. If it weren't for Tatum Channing running around either shirtless or in a wifebeater for the entire movie, I would have turned it off after about 10 minutes.

I forgot to mention that! I couldn't figure out why their hookup was bothering me so much, and then I remembered Fly Away Home, and the scene where he runs into the bathroom when she's naked, and ugh.

I watched The Big Lebowski for the first time last night, because my sister claimed that I was always missing pop-cultural references to it. John Goodman is awesome.

Huh? That wasn't in the theatrical version. She went into the bathroom when the kid accidentally gave her a nosebleed, but that's as close to what you describe as I saw.

There was the scene where the kid comes home unannounced and dad's feeling her up when the kid opens the bedroom door, though.

Cars: easily my least favorite Disney/Pixar movie. It was a very visually stunning movie and genuinely nice to look at, and I appreciated the fact that they got Paul Newman to play the crotchety old car character, especially since he still dabbles in car racing. But I didn't really care that much for the story or for Lightning McQueen, who had an enormous ego at the beginning of the movie. I think it would have been much more entertaining if I was more interested in NASCAR racing, which I find completely boring. This is the only Disney/Pixar movie that completely discounts humans, having cars take the place of humans within society, which was really... weird and unnerving. Also, Larry the Cable Guy? SHUT. UP. Gah.

See, I really like to pretend that humanity was wiped out by its own itchy nuclear finger, leaving mutated cars to roam the earth. Or we had built cars so advanced, they rejected being our slaves, ran us all over, and now imitate our society (and foibles) because they're nothing more than mere shadows of their creators.

I recently rented Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic and wound up with a little bit of a girlcrush on her. Even though at times I find her obnoxious.

My burgeoning crush on Daniel Craig led me to rent Layer Cake. While I did like the performances and the gorgeous cinematography, I found it very difficult to follow. Double-cross after double-cross, and layer after layer of bureaucracy.

I Capture the Castle is adorable, rovner.

I loved Jesus is Magic, queen, and Sarah Silverman is so very crushworthy.

We've been on a renting spree- this week we watched Cars, Lucky Number Slevin, Over the Hedge and Slither.

My boyfriend loved Cars, and I liked it much more than I thought I would. Larry the Cable Guy's voice usually gives me hives, but he didn't bother me too much. I think the gorgeous, gorgeous visuals and adorable little details outweighed the rather unispired story.

Lucky Number Slevin was suprisingly entertaining if a little over clever, while Over the Hedge was dull. It had its moments (and adorable baby porcupines!) but it suffered from being seen too soon after Cars. Even a less than stellar Pixar film kicks the ass of most other computer-animated flicks.

Slither was by far my favourite of the four, and I'm easily squicked out by even the smallest amount of blood/slime/puss. It was gross, funny and made me jump several times. The DVD extras were fun, too. I'm completely smitten with Nathan Fillion now.

All the Pretty Horses is absolute...horseshit. Matt Damon makes a beautiful cowboy, but the romance plot between him and Penelopze Cruz is just so cheesy. Just when you think it may have disappeared, it comes back and hits you in the face again.

Truly, Madly, Deeply was rather good. I teared up a million times throughout it. Juliet Stevenson just broke my heart everytime she cried, and Alan Rickman was awesome, too.

The Proposition: gritty, dirty, ugly, violent=awesome. Excellent film. I had forgotten that Guy Pearce can actually act when he wants to.

I rented Audition.

I'm still kind of traumatized. That movie ain't right. My brother was like, "Well, after the first 5 minutes of torture, you kind of get numb to it!" No. No, you do not.
