| QUOTE | | I have this honorary big brother who's permanently stuck in the 70s (like, he says "dig this" and refers to people as "cats" without even realizing), and he forced me to Netflix Disco Godfather because it's, quote, a triumph of cinema. I am sure it will bring the lolz, as they say. |
Oh man, if that's the movie also known as The Avenging Disco Godfather with Rudy Ray Moore, you're in for a treat. I have fond memories of renting it for some random reason when I was in high school and laughing my ass off, then forcing other people to watch it, too. "Attack the wack, and bust the dust!"

That's the one! I haven't watched it yet, but he gleefully sent me a YouTube vid of
the opening scene of Black Belt Jones to give me a taste of what I was in for, and it's splendid. He claims you can see the boom mic shadow in some scenes, and that people forget their lines and stuff...we both love ridiculously bad movies, so I can't wait.

Disco Godfather kicks ass, if you like bad movies -- the costumes Rudy Ray Moore wears are worth the rental by themselves. Plus, where else are you going to get a slightly gone-to-seed, beefy guy dressing in satin, doing bad martial arts moves and huffing out ridiculously snappy one-liners at the same time? All of his movies are kind of fun, even if only because he was having so much fun doing them.

I just watched The Return, which started out reaaaally slooooooow, but then started unexpectedly being quite interesting.
I finally worked out what bothers me about SMG's acting. It's like that last few seasons of Buffy where all anyone could say about her was "She's so professional" turned her into an Acting Person - she's walking right and talking right but the role doesn't seem to sit in her skin. When the scene calls for some energy and it brings her into her body, though, she knocks it out of the park. I wish she'd take a year off and go be irresponsible or something, it might help ground her.
The other was Vacancy which was also surprisingly enjoyable, and scary. Thank you to whoever decided >>the major violence to the heroine was mostly offscreen.<< That was a refreshing relief.

I made it through the last two Supernatural discs. The show is beautifully shot, the actors elevate the material by a mile, and the scary bits are at least as disturbing as anything you'd find in a Japanese horror remake. But, sadly, the writing is so derivative that absolutely nothing that happened caught me off guard or surprised me in any way. I intend to rent season 2 because I'm hoping that as the material matures. All of the other ingredients are there, really.

xyzzy, I'm near the end of Supernatural's second season and there are some interesting twists and surprises involved in the storylines; a few times I was convinced that the story was going to go in one direction, but it went a completely different way. There is one big thing that is beginning to bug me about this show, but I'm waiting until I finish the season to see if it clears itself up by the finale.

I've managed to catch a couple of TiFauxed episodes from season 2, and I'm hopeful.

The Last Kiss--a total disappointment. I thought Zach Braff was awful, and I'm not even a Braff hater. I do love Blythe Danner, though.

The Last Kiss man I finally caught that on HBO the other night and it was so awful I couldn't even finish it.
I needed a healthy dose of Grease 2 and ugly hot Louis DeMucci to clean the palate.

I just watched Volver and really enjoyed it. I don't recall a whole lot happening, but it was beautiful and human. Plus Penelope Cruz is a hottie.

I agree. I liked the Italian movie it was based on, so I wanted to like it, but it just wasn't good. Despite being the exact same story, the Italian version had a much lighter tone. The Last Kiss was just gloomy.

I loathed The Last Kiss, and I have no threshold for movies. Or standards.
I watched A Good Year, which wasn't anything like the book aside from the characters and the setting. I loved it, mostly because of the pretty pretty scenery and the soundtrack. Plus it was interesting seeing Russell Crowe in a romantic comedy. Surreal, actually, although not as strange as Harrison Ford in Sabrina (which to be honest, I loved too).

Pan's Labyrinth, which I absolutely, completely, utterly despised. I didn't even pay to see it (free rental Blockbuster coupon) and I still want my money back.

"The Sleeping Dictionary" its one of those Oscar Prestige films that turned out wrong, so they buried it from a couple of years. And I didnt hate it. It wasnt GOOD. But the supporting cast is excellent (Brenda Blethyn, Emily Mortimore, Bob Hoskins, Noah Taylor), the scenery is gorgeous, its got a a big sweeping love story, Hugh Dancy and Jessica Alba are both very pretty, and Hugh Dancy at least, can act.

I would put my reaction at, "I just didn't like it." But even so, it's nice to see someone else who didn't think it was great.
