Hot Fuzz was amusing, but Shaun of the Dead is still #1 in my heart.

Ghost Rider. Boy howdy was it bad, but I have a feeling that I would have completely loved it if it weren't for Nicholas Cage. He was just so wrong in that role, and I just didn't buy that he was supposed to be the same age as Eva Mendes. But she was hot, and her tits looked great through out the entire flick, complete with gratuitous bra peekage!

Miss Potter is utterly charming, with more depth than I expected and a surprisingly strong performance from Renee (I'm generally not a fan). I also loved Ewan--who nailed the kind-hearted, socially backwards Victorian role. What a great little film; too bad it didn't get more attention when it was released.

Take the Lead! Ballroom dancing! Antonio Banderas! I liked this way more than it deserved for me to.

Recently I have enjoyed the previously mentioned Miss Potter and I really liked Music And Lyrics. I have to say that fake 80s music video just grabbed me right from the beginning, and it was PERFECT. In fact, just thinking about it puts that song in my head.
I also watched the HBO miniseries Elizabeth with Helen Mirren, Jeremy Irons, and Hugh Dancy. Sooooo good. Great for people who like historical accuracy AND costume porn. While some of the history is a bit hinky, mostly it was quite close to what actually happened. And of course, there is just kick ass acting all around.

Finally watched Citizen Kane. I get the fuss over the production, and it was especially interesting to hear Ebert's commentary and realize just how many techniques Welles cribbed from radio and used in film for the first time, but overall, the story itself left me pretty cold. The characterization is pretty shallow and uninvolving. I actually found his second wife to be the most fully-drawn character in the film, probably even moreso than Kane himself. That said, it's pretty entertaining, and leagues better than Casablanca, if we're talking AFI's favored children.

Miss Potter was really cute. aminia and I both enjoyed watching it, and Ewan was just so cute, and their entire love affair was wonderful and awkward and sweet.

I have this honorary big brother who's permanently stuck in the 70s (like, he says "dig this" and refers to people as "cats" without even realizing), and he forced me to Netflix Disco Godfather because it's, quote, a triumph of cinema. I am sure it will bring the lolz, as they say.
And after watching Disturbia I am forced -- forced -- to admit that Shia's actually pretty good and I like him. That's so disappointing.

| Young Mickey Rourke and Ted Danson totally made me go "Hey!" the first time I saw "Body Heat". |
Totally! I thought "Wow, Ted Danson once made movies where he didn't just play Ted Danson? How odd."
This weekend I watched You and Me and Everyone We Know and Live Flesh. YAMAEWK was very sweet and funny, but I'm not sure if my overwhelming crush on John Hawkes is blinding me. It was nice to see the crazy twee woman-child character get the reactions that such a person would get in real life ("What are you doing in my car??") even though I liked this twee woman-child much more than, say, Natalie Portman's character in Garden State. Also, it was beautifully shot.
Live Flesh was, like most of Almodovar's more recent films, utterly brilliant and fantastic. He gets such great performances out of his actors, and he always picks interesting women to be in his films. I've also rented Matador, but I'm hesitant to watch it because I didn't like Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down and I fear that his early films are too stylised. Live Flesh, though, has great style and beauty but you can tell the director has such sympathy for his characters. On a shallow note, Javier Bardem and Liberto Radal are really fine. That pleased me as well.

I think someone in chat even thought that was Eva Mendes. So yeah, it kind of makes Johnny Blaze seem a little miscats. I guess you could fanwank it (if one is so inclined to be a "fan") that Satan owning your soul will make you look like Nicholas Cage. It's like a horcrux, but worse.

Just finished watching Stiff Upper Lips. Very silly and amusing and Sean Pertwee is pretty darn hot. He should stick to roles where is wanders around with his shirt off whilst looking angry/stoic.

Oh man, if that's the movie also known as The Avenging Disco Godfather with Rudy Ray Moore, you're in for a treat. I have fond memories of renting it for some random reason when I was in high school and laughing my ass off, then forcing other people to watch it, too. "Attack the wack, and bust the dust!"

I saw this at a film festival and thought it was hilarious.
"Needles, Mr. Needles actually."
And all the hilarious Canadian hate.
