Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a seriously underrated movie. I saw it in the the theater and though it was great. Fun, action-adventury and visually amazing. I was disappointed that didn't do very well money -wise.

Interstella 5555, which is an anime film commissioned by Daft Punk with their entire second album as the soundtrack. No dialogue, just dance music and a crazy story about an evil music producer kidnapping aliens to be pop-stars on Earth.

I kinda want to see this.

Last movie I rented (and watched): Coffee and Cigarettes. Enjoyed the scenes with Cate Blanchett, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, and the elderly Italian men. The rest of the movie? Bad. Really bad. The idea behind this film was interesting and all, but the final results were disappointing.

I also rented Notes on a Scandal and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Didn't get around to watching those yet.

Oh weird, I just watched Notes on a Scandal. I was really looking forward to seeing it, but it turned out to be remarkably dull, Phillip Glass score and scenery-eating con-*test*-('") aside. But oh, can Dame Judi ever bring the crazy eyes.

Sky Captain was a bit ahead of its time from an effects standpoint, but I think nostalgia for golden age sci-fi is a very, very niche in its appeal.

I remember something of a controvery over Lawrence Olivier's image being used in the movie--but it's pretty quick, and the guy did worse movies before he died.

Yeah. I think it was very niche. I would love to see the director do more work. He has some genuine talent.

We just finished watching The Matador with Pierce Brosnan. It was hilariously filthy and totally under-rated. Roger Ebert liked it so I knew I would too. There are some bullfighting scenes in the movie and apparently they were computer generated. They were beautifully done.

I loved that movie. And I think Pierce Brosnan's performance totally gave him a whole new interesting Post-Bond direction.

I just watched Amélie for the first time. I quite enjoyed it. The part where >>Amélie guides the blind man down the street and describes to him everything she sees ("And there is a girl who is watching a dog, who is watching the chickens")<< made me cry. Because I am weird.

I've got The Prestige lined up by my DVD all ready to go. But I'm a little bit drunk. Maybe I should save it, in case it's complicated and I can't follow it.

Bought The Bourne Supremacy cuz it was Wallmarts 5$ bin.

I still like it, and found all the commentary interesting. Paul Greengrass has a sexy voice, but someone should tell him that Bourne is, above all, an action movie. I don't think he knows.

However, I'd like to see Chris Cooper in something lighter or comedic because I'm really starting to believe that he never smiles in real life because he always plays such crabby and angry characters in his movies.

I met him once, very briefly, and he was nice to me. I don't remember if he smiled or not, but he was incredibly polite and gracious, if that helps.

We watched Jesus Camp the other night. I can't remember the last time I saw a movie that made me so angry. (This is why I stay away from Michael Moore films.) We started off laughing, and making jokes. (Like when the girl went over to the chick at the bowling alley, I wanted to chick to say, "That's funny, God told me he wants you to go to a real school and learn about evolution, global warming, and how to be a normal kid.") But about half-way through, we were just angry. We also didn't get how anyone could've thought Ted Haggard was straight. When he pronounced something "fabulous!" I about fell off my couch. We're waiting for the story to break that the female preacher (Becky?) is a lesbian. And that Air America guy is my hero - she totally got tongue tied the minute he argued logic to her. Also, Levi? Either going to be a David Koresh or end up a heroin addicted prostitute by the age of 15. I hope there's some sort of follow-up movie in 10 years or so, so we can see how many of these kids are still brainwashed.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

I was glad to see that its sweetness and warmth held up after 5 years. I know its cliche and simple, but I really liked it. One of the few movies I went to see again, and took my mother. John Corbett says the same thing on the commentary, it's the kind of movie you can bring your entire family too without being uncomfortable ever. Nia Vardalos sounds like a real sweetheart in the commentary, too, and I like her all the more after the Entertainment Lawyer's Blind Item about her anonymous generosity.

Perfume was unusual and excellent. I never thought odor could be translated so well to a visual medium, but they managed to make scent another character in the film.

Zodiac was also very good, but not so much a serial killer flick as it is a film about those fascinated by serial killers. I read the Graysmith novel a few times as a kid and I liked how this film explored his character.

cinnamon- 07-24-2007
I just rented Perfume as well! The ending was the crackiest thing I've ever seen >>WTForgy? Seriously?<<, but it was really lush and dramatic and kind of cool. And I always love Alan Rickman.

xyzzy- 07-25-2007
Hah, I recommended the movie to a friend of mine and he told me that he was totally into it right up until the crack!scene in the Grasse square. I kind of expected weirdness going in, given the film's foreign nature and strange subject matter, so it didn't sway me much in one direction or another. I loved Rickman for the most part, too, but I think he blew his last scene.

cinnamon- 07-25-2007
Yeah, I love him, but I was really confused by that. For a few moments, I actually thought >>he might have been his son -- hey, we didn't know anything about his father; we just knew he was the fifth child born to his crazy fishwife mother<<, but that was stupid, I guess. I do wanna read the book now, though.
