It wasn't so much a WWII film per se, as it was an anti-war film exploring the cynical way the government propped up "heroes" to justify the war effort.

I could get totally behind the subject matter if it weren't for the fact that the movie was edited by a crackspider. The side and front and backward and upside down flashback thing did not do justice to the narrative, imho.

The Libertine.

These days, unless I recognize the director/writers, I basically assume that any non-mainstream Johnny Depp movie is going to be disappointing, save his character, who will be an adventure in How Weird Can Johnny Be and Get Away With?

Yep.

I'll admit to having a shitty attention span for period movies, particularly when I rent them, so this was basically playing in the background. But I don't really know what happened except for >> Him dying of syphilis<<, and I've been told that basically nothing does. I love Johnny, but sometimes I wish he'd look outside the character at the whole movie.

That said, a few years ago I had an evil whore roommate in college, and I routinely used to wish that she'd get syphilis from all her whoring. Apparently, this was a very mean thought.

Earlier I asked.

Is it one of those biopics that assumes you already are familiar with the subject, and thus takes certain things as read, thus leaving the uninitiated viewer feeling lost?

Yeah. The Libertine was exactly the sort of movie I'm talking about. I happened to know a bit about that part of British History, so I could follow along... but I knew if I hadn't I would have been so lost I'd be co-starring with Evangaline Lilly.

I rented Corpse Bride and it was odd and sweet, much like most Tim Burton movies. I know it was only a cartoon movie but I came really close to crying at the end. My thought process: >> "AWWWW she's butterflies going up to the moon! WAAAH....Dumbass.">>

Also, you must see Pan's Labyrinth if you haven't yet. It totally deserves every award it's gotten. Bring tissues.

Unless it won Raspberries....

Yeah, Flags of Our Fathers managed to not even work very much for the World War II films crowd (Neither did Letters from Iwo Jima, but generally for different reasons)

I actually enjoyed The Libertine when I saw it in the theater. I was even considering buying it but haven't yet.

Last night I watched Breach and thought it was fantastic. Chris Cooper is an amazing actor. I also enjoyed Laura Linney (as usual). The only question I had throughout the movie is, will Ryan Phillippe ever look older than 16? He's one of the youngest-looking actors I've ever seen.

Shut up and Sing: I really liked it. I was more fascinated by the group and their relationship then the controversy though. And I laughed when Adrian Pasdar says he only ever plays lawyers. Cause its true.

Blood and Chocolate...not exactly good but I enjoyed it. I still dont know if Agnes Bruckner can act, but Hugh Dancy's hot, and it was a lot of fun. It helped that I had not attachement to the book. In fact I hated it, mostly because I really disliked Vivian (we get it. Your beautiful), and felt bad for Aiden, particularly at the end, so the changes actually worked for me. I know. Unpopular opinion. I was probably the only 15 year old who HATED that book.

I just watched Breaking the Waves, which I completely loathed. It was so long and felt it, too. I couldn't relate to any of the characters nor did I see it as some great love story. Hated hated hated. I want my two and a half hours back.

I will concede that Emily Watson is an incredible actress, though, and totally deserved the Oscar nom. But I still hated the movie.

In my summer catch-up on classic chick flicks, I chose a weepie last night and watched Terms of Endearment. Um...*sob.* That's the only intelligent commentary I have on that. The scene when Emma <<says goodbye to her boys, and the older one is being mopey and adolescent and can't admit he loves his mommy, and the younger one is just barely holding it together? Why don't you just kill me now, movie?>>

I watched The History Boys, and boy that Jamie Parker has a beautifully deep voice! I completely forgot everything else going on because I was so entranced...

ginmar- 06-22-2007
Just rented "House Of Flying Daggers" and OMG the hot men in that movie! The yearning looks, the chemistry.....Oh, yeah, and I guess there was some fights, too.

MaddyCat- 06-22-2007
Ooooh...I adore that film. Every single part of it is beautiful. And the end...sniff, sniff.

ginmar- 06-22-2007
Holy cow, I've watched it twice already and it's just stunning. I had to buy it. And now I'm watching something called the "Tool Kit Murders" or something and it's your standard slasher.

We just finished watching Formula 51 (I think it is also known as the 51st State) and holy hell that was hilariously insane. The first ten minutes were perfection. My husband and I loved it. We both agreed it was up there with The Transporter. (aka the grea-*test*-('") film to not come up with a plot until half way through the film)

Earlier this week we watched Night at the Opera since Mr. Jenner had never seen it. I know I know what a completely deprived childhood but we fixed that. He even found it funny so I am glad to know that he was the right person to marry and have a child with. These little things count a lot.
