Dream Girls, it was a cute movie. Lots of singing, very little story. Effie's story was way way more interesting than Deena's. Did people really think this deserved an Oscar?
Jersey Girl, which from what I remembered of the previews I thought was a romantic comedy. It is really really not. I still liked it, but promo makers need to read the storyline.

Kookla - I couldn't agree more with all of your points about Babel. I left the theater realizing I'd never get that 2+ hours of my life back.

I watched The Departed last night. I liked it, up till the end. Not that there could have been a happier/alternative ending. I kept waiting for Alec Baldwin to be revealed as a rat too.

Alpha Dog - it was ultimately an incredibly frustrating movie to watch because I kept wanting to strangle all of the characters for being so goddamn stupid. That isn't to say that I didn't think the movie was good, because I did think it was very good. Nearly all of the actors did excellent jobs, which is probably why I had such a strong reaction to their characters.

I probably woulnd't have terribly liked that very much. I think he contrasted with Michael Sheen's gentle, do-the-right-thing character, as opposed to Baldwin's "Career opportunist".

Melinda and Melinda. Not bad. I liked the cast and concept of the film, even if the final results were slow-paced and inconsistent.
Brokeback Mountain. Watchable but hardly Academy-worthy fare. Jake Gyllenhaal was the only one whose performance really impressed me.

Superman Returns. I have very mixed feelings about this film. I thought Mr. Routh did an excellent job with his role. I liked most of the story, particularly the bits where Superman had to be rescued. I was fine with the somewhat super kid, too, and the lovely scene between Superman and the kid at the end. The visuals were often stunning. And yet, something was very unclicky. I wanted the story to be about Superman gaining back trust, but it focused more on Lex Luthor's revenge and an unlikely diabolical plot. I'd like to lay the blame on Kevin Spacey, but he actually turned in a performance that rang true to the character. So I guess I have to blame the script. It was too ambitious and it weakened a very strong foundation. I'll watch the next one.
The Holiday. Extremely predictable, but cute. Isn't that true of all romcoms? I liked the trailer gag that popped its head up now and again.

Who Killed the Electric Car: very interesting stuff, especially how the car manufacturing companies chose to dispose of the electric cars and pretty much force people to give them up even though people were very willing to pay to keep their cars.
Little Children: I have been waiting a LONG time to see this. Very well worth the wait. The movie was a little slower than the book, but still very engrossing. I found the movie ending to be just as ambiguous, but more satisfying.

Same here. It never played in the theaters where I lived.
I thought it was excellent. Great performances all around, and more funny than I was expecting. The NFL/football scene was genius. I'm headed to the library to find the book.

I'm watching Reality Bites for the first time in, like, ten years. Part of me feels that it's dated - Melrose Place references and all - and part of me feels my heart break all over again, because when I first saw it I was 13 and young and all excited about the future, and now I'm a little older than they are and understanding what it's like to be just out of college and feeling lost. And that feeling of not knowing who you are, or what you want, or who you want to become. Plus, the soundtrack is awesome.

Most of the time--they definitely tried to break away from that with The Break-Up, an was met with mass confusion by audiences everywhere.
xyzzy- 05-07-2007
Didn't they have to change the ending to make it less confusing?
The trailers for that movie keep me from seeing it... I guess I don't want to watch people fight a lot, even if they do it in a humorous or amusing way.

It did make a lot of money though, and I actually liked it, but really it was ill advertised. It was more of a really dark comedy, because it was uncomfortable how (realistically) awful those two people were to each other.

See, I didn't even see it as "dark comedy". I saw it more like "drama with oddly placed bits of Vince Vaughn doing 'funny' improv."
xyzzy- 05-07-2007
See, I loved The War of the Roses because of the awesome darkly funny bits ("That depends on what the pate is made of.") Maybe I'll give Vince and Jen a go.
