I finally decided I had to see what all the fuss was over, and I rented Firefly and subsequently watched Serenity. I think I now understand much of the Browncoats insanity. Assuming, of course, the reason they went insane was because of sheer prettiness of the cast of that show/movie.

And now, I am totally crushing on Nathan Fillion. Good gracious is that one FINE lookin' man.

I wish it could be cooler, but I picked out Xanadu. Hell, but that movie is ridiculous and wonderful at the same time.! Roller-dancing, Stevie Nicks' wardrobe, the dildo-coiffed Muse (good call on that, gofugyourself), and Gene Kelly. By the time they hit the club opening dance routine, my boyfriend was rendered speechless by the amount of drugs that must have been consumed to produce the thing. That and the trapeze artist in gold lame rollerboots, anyway.

It was beautiful.

Straight men and lesbians really don't have a reason to watch this movie unless they're Friday Night Lights fans who happen to be Taylor Kitsch completists

I have a feeling being in the second category disqualifies you from the first. And "Taylor Kitsch" is not his name. That has to be made up.

Next up: Agnes and His Brothers.

Is that the German movie with Moritz Bleibtreu? Because if it is, I saw it and thought it was a bit strange. There are lots of plots that are just dropped for no apparent reason at all.

I came across Habit on IFC at 2:00 AM this weekend -- very, very weird indie vampire movie. Kind of disturbing.

RiverThames- 04-24-2007
I've always meant to watch that one, but I don't have IFC anymore. I've been intrigued, though, because Heather Woodbury is made of awesome, and it's one of her few film credits.

I saw American Pimp the other night, and it was definitely interesting, but I found it more unsettling than I thought I would. Not because of any disturbing imagery, but more for the near-total lack thereof. I was about to go become a pimp myself.

I think it's great they followed the pimps so closely and that we really got to "know" them, but I wouldn't have minded some statistics or something (how old are most girls who become prostitutes when they start? Like, early teens, yes?), just for a bit of context.

Anyway, I can't decide if I liked it or not, but I was riveted, and have been thinking about it ever since.

My pimpumentary of choice is Pimps Up, Ho's Down, but it's basically the same movie. I don't know how to feel about it/them, either; they're the same combination of hilarious and deeply upsetting.

Instant Monkeys- 04-24-2007
A lot of reviews I've read of the movie have mentioned that one, jolie laide, and many have said it's better. I think I'll stick it in my queue.

D'oh, Netflix doesn't have it. Well, I'll keep an eye out.

I caught a little bit of it on AMC, so i decided to track down Dragonwyck, Joe Mankowitz's directorial debut, featuring a much younger Vincent Price as a dutch aristocrat obssessed with obtaining a son. He's always a pleasure to watch in films, but seeing him stretch his acting muscles a little more, and as a (warped version of) a romantic lead is really great. I wish the movie hadn't dumped the daughter subplot halfway through.

I’m back to torturing myself with Altman

Cookie’s Fortune: Liv Tyler invite your voice coach on a boat ride to Catalina and kick them overboard midway.

Ah yes Altman firing up the southern quirkiness! I’m doing the Matthew Fox head shakes in the rage that is a director who on his best day let’s actors out Herod Herod tack on broad southern characters and braying fake drawls. Good lord! Sherman wasn’t this hard on the South!

CF has the distinction of Altman’s most thudding punch lines. “ABC negative blood” and Ned Beaty thinking awe is pronounced “ah wee”. How do you even get Ned below the Mason-Dixon after what the hillbilly did to him.

CF also was the grea-*test*-('") incident of critic suckholery I have ever witnessed. On At The Movies Ebert declared Cookie’s Fortune one of Altman’s best, Roeper added that was in effect saying it is one of the best movies ever. Siskel must have been spinning in his grave.

It was the biggest piece of over effusive praise I have heard outside of any discussion of American soccer. Like that documentary on the Cosmos where Matt Dillon intoned “The Cosmos had hundreds of people in the stands, the players could be picked out of a line up and Americans gave a flying fuck about them kicking the ball.”

The Covenant was dreadful. The acting was poor (though those actors were so, so pretty), the CGI was cheap-looking... really, if this movie was made by better writers/directors, it probably would have been pretty good.
Most annoying scene in the movie: where they all dance/sing along to I Love Rock and Roll. That song should not be used in any movies for a long while.

I got bored so I rented Eragon, and it wa pretty uninspired, but not really Dungeons and Dragons bad. (Though it was beyond shamless how they matched the "Hero looking into the sun" thing from Star Wars shot for shot) In fact, Jeremy Irons seems to know what he's doing here, and carries the scenes that he's in. (Which makes the last twenty minutes or so an exercise in pointlessness) But 20 years from now you can count on nostalgiac man-children defending the thin virtues of this film.

Drunk as fuck. I rented Trailer Park Boys the Movie, and I loved it! I had my reservations, but it is fucking awesome.

I also rented Gross Pointe Blank, which was okay.

Next up, The Queen and Bad Santa.
