Battle Royale.  A Japanese film about some out-of-control kids.  The totalitarian government decides they want to do something about it, so they randomly select one seventh-grade class, drug them, and transport them to an island far away.  Their task?  To kill each other until there's only one person left alive.  And if more than one person is alive at the end of the three days, they *all* die.

Fucking awesome movie.  I thought it was going to be gore and nothing else, but it was psychologically thrilling and suspenseful as well.  And, even more surprisingly, there were some really moving, poignant scenes throughout the film.  It was even funny sometimes.  I'd say "not for those who are easily scared," but I am easily scared, and I loved it anyway.  Rent it!

Ooh, you should definitely check out Battle Royale II. It's the continuation of the story, what happens >>after the two survivors escape<<. I thought it was very good, with similar moving story lines amidst the gore.

Please remember to include the >> before and after spoilered text so as to alert people to spoilered text. Thanks.

Courtesy of the library, I watched Hustle and Flow and Ryan's Daughter over the weekend.

Quite a combination, and H&F was alright, didn't impress me necessarily; meanwhile RD, although quite passionate (from the lovers to the townspeople's reactions), was too dramatic!

All in all, I think I need a hearing aid b/c I had difficulty understanding both (I'm ESL too so that has an influence).

Well now that I know what happens, I guess I can skip right to the second one.

I can tell you all about that one too, if you like. Sorry for spoilering you.

A couple of days ago, I watched She's the Man.  Seriously.  If it weren't for Tatum Channing running around either shirtless or in a wifebeater for the entire movie, I would have turned it off after about 10 minutes.

I thought that movie was hilarious. I had super low expectations for it, and the librarian said it would be funny, and, well, it was.

And, yes, Tatum Channing is VERY fun to look at.

... Why are we calling him Tatum Channing?

OMG, Miami Vice. HANDS DOWN the worst movie I saw this year. For some unknown reason one of the other managers at my old job (I had the illustrious position of managing a Blockbuster) absolutely loved this movie. Actually, not an unknown reason -- he's a huge Michael Mann fan. He is the only person up until now I'd heard of who didn't utterly loathe everything about the movie from beginning to end. Truly, I hated it. I cannot think of one redeeming feature about it.

Even the awesome boat wasn't enough. I'm never going to get those two and a half hours back, and it makes me sad in my heart.

Heh, is that not his name? Is it Channing Tatum? He was in Coach Carter, too, and that movie is AWESOME.

Just saw Philadelphia Story for the first time--and I love classics. It's so damn good and I'm ashamed not to have seen it before.

Hepburn has crack comic-timing and the tiniest waist I've ever seen, Carey Grant looks delicious and also knows how to deliver a killer line and Jimmy Stewart just plain rocks. Excellent film.

Heh, it's totally Channing Tatum. Heh heh heh. I'll just be over here giggling about that one for the next two weeks.

Except for the moral that it's OK to commit adultery because you can always blame it on your daughter's unhappy marriage...

I love you for saying this. I enjoyed the movie too but that was the exact same problem I had with it.

Plus, I'm not entirely sure that Katherine Hepburn ended up with the right man. But I did like that it was a romantic comedy where the choice wasn't glaringly obvious. The way it panned out, she really could've gone with either one of them and it would've made sense.

Mr. Shrew and I bought ourselves a Netfliz subscription for Christmas this year, and the first movie we received was Donnie Darko. What a strange, creepy, sad movie. Coming next is Big Night, which I timed specially so we could watch it when my parents came to visit.

I rented The Lake House tonight and it was....okay. Pretty people and an interesting story so I would say it's all-around good, but it was kind of sad and depressing and not enough with the shmoopy romantic stuff that I was in the mood for.

I just saw Silent Hill, which, while it wasn't exactly good, was nowhere near the steaming pile I'd been expecting. Sean Bean's attempt at an American accent is an excellent bit of comedy, but I can't blame him--he wasn't the bad guy and he didn't die, so he was probably pretty disoriented and scared during filming.
