Next up is Shortbus and Fast Food Nation.

Shortbus is so good -- surprisingly touching and layered, so that the 'pornographic' elements hardly seem to matter by the end. Or it matters, but not in an offensive way; just in a how-sex-connects-humanity kind of way.

Didn't even know it was out on DVD already. Must buy!

I do think this is the review that's going to mean war, Dude. I'm just saying, if there's anything you learn from being on a film messageboard, it's that you're better off making fun of burn ward victims than childhood favorites.

Which does Michael Jackson qualify as?

You know what though? This was Sin City before there was Sin City,
Lil Abner, had more sex.

and I think the two movies should ever be bound as double features until someone rightfully makes a version of Annie where the characters have their eyelids digitally removed.
Or Dick Tracy beating a confession out of Flat Top with a phone book.

Flat Top made all garishly-dressed cartoon villains cringe with shame.

He had to do something to draw attention away from his head.

Someone at The Onion feels the way I do.

I made the mistake of going to see Cruel Intentions with my mom (!!) when it came out (un. comfortable) and Malkovich's voice sounded very similar to Ryan Phillippe's to me. Actually, I guess it's the other way 'round.

I think John Malcovich is an oft-imitated actor amongst many youngsters--they're definately trying to tape into his way of speaking and mannerisms. Peter Sarsgaard sounds exactly like him, which is why I always make sure to wtach the first half hour of Man in the Iron Mask, because it's just too funny to watch son doing an SNL-ish impersonation of his father.

Kiran- 03-16-2007
Hee. Thats actually my fave part of tha film. I dont like much else about it, but I love the Peter Sarsgaard casting, cause really who else pretty much naturally sounds a lot like Malkovich and has that same kinda creepy, kinda weird, a little bit offputing sexuality.

Watched Marie Antoinette last night. It was ok. I think a different actress would've made it a better movie. Some of KD's line readings were just flat and horrible. But I'm hard pressed to think of someone in that generation of actresses who isn't either totally wrong for the part, or else completely bland, like Kiki.
It also could've used a better editor. Someone else (I forget who, sorry!) mentioned earlier in the thread that there were too many editing/drinking montages, and I agree. We get it; there was a lot of decadence. Now tell the damn story. The costumes, however, were gorgeous, and truly deserving of the Oscar. I was coveting some of the shoes.
Sidenote: I remember going to Versailles when I was in high school, and I couldn't blame MA for preferring the hamlet to the castle. That place was fabulous.

Tonight I saw The Unbearable Lightness of Being. I wasn't sure I would like it at first, but I ended up very much enjoying it (and I saw more naked women in that movie than I've seen in the past year). Some scenes were so lovely; it was like watching poetry. Daniel Day-Lewis and Juliette Binoche are two of my favorite actors, and both of them are So Fucking Sexy in this movie. "Take off your clothes." Okay, Daniel, whatever you say!

V for Vendetta was really interesting up until the >>Fake Guantanamo<< I don't care what your ultimate goal is, that was NOT RIGHT. I totally stopped being sympathetic to V after that, no matter how sexy his voice was.

The Last Kiss. It was pretty good, I thought. I didn't hate Zach Braff nearly as much as I thought I would - that said, he should stay on Scrubs, he's not leading man cute. I didn't like that Jenna >> appeared to take him back at the end of the movie with no real reason. He cheated on her while she's pregnant and other than her righteous rage and him sleeping on the porch for a weekend, he didn't make it up to her at all. I would have like at least one alt. ending where she left him. Because infidelity is bad, dude.<<

Friday night was The Notorious Bettie Page, which was a fascinating look at sexual attitudes in the 50's. I've never thought much of Gretchen Mol as an actress, but I thought she was superb as Bettie. Plus, very easy on the eyes. If you like pretty actresses with their tops off, get thee to a video store. As an added bonus, the special features includes the real Bettie doing a little nudie film. It's very hokey, but that's its charm - her sweetness and "we're just playing dress-up" comes across, even though there's no sound.

Last night was Hollywoodland. Wow, who knew that Ben Affleck could act? (I kid, sorta. He's much better than I've ever given him credit for.) It was very ironic that George Reeve's first acting role was in Gone With The Wind - a speaking role, no less - and then his career went downhill from there.

That's my daily motto, really.

I wouldn't say Reeve's career went downhill after Gone With the Wind. It's like saying Dominic Monoghan's career is worsening because there are no more Lord of the Rings movies to do, and he just has the TV show. In real life, the strange thing is, Adventures of Superman was never officially cancelled--the show just took really long hiatuses, which I guess left Reeves a little dry at times.

I saw Labyrinth for the first time tonight. It was fun and cheesy, Jennifer Connelly was gorgeous, and David Bowie rocked his spectacular mullet of evilness.

We watched Shortbus last night, which really surprised me by how lovely it was. My goodness. I mean, yes, sex, but Mitchell sort of gets you over the "OOH REAL SEX" novelty in the first few minutes, and from there, concentrating on the movie part of the movie isn't a problem. I really really enjoyed it, as well as the extras about the process of making the film - that was fascinating stuff.

Casino Royale is up next. Yay?

laddical- 03-19-2007
Very much "YAY!!!"
