Stay: holy fuck, I have no idea what happened in this film. It was one big ball of confusion.

Watch the special features (especially the scene-specific commentary) and then watch the movie again. LIGHTBULB!

Aw, crap, we've already sent the disc back to Netflix. Care to enlighten me?

I'll do my best. I'll PM you, and if anyone else is interested, I can copy it back into the thread. No point in having one long spoiler post.

I wonder, can a movie so incomprehensible ever be truly spoiled?

Follow-up: Jesus Camp was freakin' insane. I was literally sitting with my mouth hanging open at a few parts. You've got to rent it.

(And I love the poetry of the fact that I watched it and then hurriedly put it back in the mailbox so I could have Queer As Folk, S4, disc one for Saturday.)

I'm not really into Hollywood Classics, but I'm doing an independent study on gender and film this quarter, and although the focus is primarily on sci-fi, there is some general basics in there as well. I just finished watching Stella Dallas and I really liked it. I was surprised by how much I liked it, actually. I'd already read several essays on the film, so I knew the plot and it had been analyzed to death, which usually takes all the fun out of things for me. But I still really liked this. It was sadly sweet, but not sappy. Barbara Stanwyck was great and she deserved more than just the Oscar nomination for this.

The Prestige is arriving from Netflix today. I didn't get a chance to see it in the theater, so I'm very excited.

OH GOD SO GOOD. SO MUCH SEXINESS.

But seriously, a really good movie. There are a lot of twists and turns, so pay attention!

My movie is Brick from Netflix. It's a film-noir-esque set in a high school. The "detective" is a kid whose investigating the teenager-run drug rings. I haven't decided whether or not I liked it. There were certainly a lot of WTF moments.

I'm not sure if the combination of 40's film-noir and teenage drama was a good idea. The director gets points for originality, but I recall rolling my eyes quite a bit when watching Brick. Still, I didn't totally regret watching it.

Yea, there were parts of it that just didn't work. Although it was an creative idea, so the director gets points from me.

The thing I couldn't stand was the lead kid. He mumbled half of his lines. I couldn't understand what he was saying.

I LOVED Brick. I thought it was enthralling and unique and I love Joseph Gordon-Levitt so so much.

My roommate hated it and we got in a big fight about it.

queenofdenile- 02-23-2007
For me, Brick was a movie that was completely WTF? and weird at the beginning, but as it went on, the combo of high school drama/noir really grew on me.

I also loved Brick. It's responsible for my newfound love of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It took me a bit to get into the noir dialogue, but once I was in, I was hooked.

Skyblade- 02-23-2007
Yeah, Brick was really good, though I'm surprised no one thought of the idea before.

Watched Half Nelson tonight. I have to say I wasn't particularly impressed, and whereas Ryan Gosling was fine (and I know he's a favorite around here) I'm scratching my head a little over his Best Actor nomination.
