Yeah he is. "The Best thing about high school girls is I keep getting older, but they stay the same age" is uber creepy.
I rented Two Brothers because I wanted to see Guy Pierce back when he was hot and the manorexia hadnt taken hold. My fave part of that movie is that you know if it was pg-13, he would be banging Freddie Highmore's mom.

Dazed and Confused was huge when I was in High School, but we were kind of the stoner capital Rhode Island. I think I even know a couple of people who took McConaghey's philosophies and made them their own. These folks seriously go to the same keggars ten years after graduation.

Clerks II from netflix. I really enjoyed it. Some of it was a bit much for me, but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. And it was REALLY funny.
It also made me just a wee bit nostalgic for NJ, but that's probably because my semester has been really rough and i miss my friends. Although the movie helped.
I also liked Randal a lot more in the 2nd one than in the first.

I just saw The Wicker Man -- the original, not the Nic Cage bearsuit karate one -- for the first time. Definitely the best evil pagan musical I've seen in a while.
No, seriously, what...what? The plot is kinda weak, but I barely noticed, because my brain was too busy going WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT I WANT MY MOMMY. |
That was my reaction, too! Seriously, WHAT?

Talladega Nights: The Ricky Bobby Story. Home on a snow day...nothing else to do.
It was better than I expected it to be, but trite. Loved the part with the cougar in the car to get Ricky to confront his fears. Awww, Cal was so cute. Poor guy never gets to come in first.

I watched The Departed with some friends on Valentine's Day (because what better way to celebrate a fake love holiday than with violent movies?) and really enjoyed it. Except I couldn't help feeling bad for Leo, who still looks like a teenager even with facial hair.

This probably works in his favour. I know it works in my favour.

Yeah, I think DiCaprio needs to give up on the 'staches, even though it's sort of appropriate since he's playing a wannabe Irish mobster.

Marie-Antoinette.
I liked this movie. It was more free-spirited than other period pieces. I was curious as to how the indie/new wave tunes would be used, but for the most part the musical selections worked quite well. However there were some moments that resulted in eye-rolling or accidental laughter(the fireworks in the shape of Marie and Louis' initials, a character with a British accent proclaiming that France shouldn't show any weakness to England). Also, Rip Torn was out of place as the King of France. Strangely enough, the same can't be said for Molly Shannon and Asia Argento.

| And how funny is it that McConaughey has taken so much of his life's philosophy (including the name of his production company) from his character? Maybe I misinterpreted it, but I thought his character was meant to be a pathetic jackass, still hitting on high school girls at his age. Did he not get that at all? Or is he even more ironic than I thought? |
This is why I find Matthew McConaughey so skeevy*. He dated a girl I went to high school with when he was 34 and she was 23. He wants you to think that his life's motto is "Just Keep Living" but it's really "That's what I love about these high school girls; I get older, they stay the same age."
*That, and the fact that he "breaks a sweat every day" but refuses to wear deodorant.
I saw Taxi Driver for the first time today. I've put off seeing it for years because the premise didn't appeal to me at all. I'm not surprised that I didn't like it, or didn't get it, one or the other. It's hard for any movie to live up to that kind of hype.

Crank. Hee hee, that was a lot of fun, even though the ending wasn't what I'd expected. Bonus points for the scene in Chinatown between Jason Statham and Tasty Coma Wife (aka Amy Smart). If you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talkin' about.

Heh. Crank's been on my university movie channel recently -- I've kind of been trying to tune in to look for that scene, just because I've heard it's funny. Heh heh. And A Scanner Darkly is on too; eventually I'd like to watch it, it seems interesting.
From Netflix I just watched Layer Cake -- didn't really love the movie, but Daniel was smokin'. That man is just too cool. And it was cool to see what's-his-name, the guy who's going to play Kingsley in OotP. Next up is Jesus Camp; I've been looking forward to this one for a while.

Invincible with Mark Wahlberg. I'm a sucker for feel-good sports flicks, so I enjoyed it quite a bit. And the making-of with the real-life guy was funny as hell, mostly because the guy is totally nuts (in a fun way).
Half Nelson up next, which I imagine is the exact opposite of a feel-good movie.

The Karate Kid II: cheesily entertaining and easy to make fun of. I loved how the first five minutes was a rehash of the first film, so much so that they could have had a voiceover guy saying "Previously, on The Karate Kid..." I missed William Zabka as Daniel's nemesis; the younger Asian guy just didn't cut it.
Stay: holy fuck, I have no idea what happened in this film. It was one big ball of confusion.

The movie's actually kind of brilliant, but it's been underplayed because the studio really didn't know how audiences were going to repond to it. They just didn't know what to do with the movie.
