Ah, well, maybe you're familair with the entire Takashi Miike collection, you might be. Gods knows I'm numbed towards humanity now.

Slither was by far my favourite of the four, and I'm easily squicked out by even the smallest amount of blood/slime/puss. It was gross, funny and made me jump several times. The DVD extras were fun, too. I'm completely smitten with Nathan Fillion now.
I was just coming here to post exactly that. I really wasn't expecting to like it much, but my overwhelming Nathan Fillion crush convinced me to watch it and I was quite immpressed.
I too enjoyed Jesus is Magic and I usually dislike almost all stand-up.
I rented High School Musical last weekend as well. Such cheesy goodness. Like Bollywood in an American high school.

I rented Silent Hill. So...sweet, I don't have to play the game.

Over the Hedge was cute, but totally predictible. All the animated movies are cute and of course end up with a huge redemption arc. It's the story inbetween that makes the difference.

but the romance plot between him and Penelopze Cruz is just so cheesy. Just when you think it may have disappeared, it comes back and hits you in the face again.
Isn't that so true with so many Penelope Cruz roles??? She was ok in Blow, but that was Johnny Depp's movie and she was just there as dressing.

I rented Superman Returns over the weekend. I originally intended to see the movie in theaters but the hype was fucking with my expectations so I held out until the movie was available to rent.
I absolutely loved the movie. Yes, I have issues with the pacing. Yes, I think that Lois Lane sucked donkey balls. (I think it was mostly the casting but I can't separate the actress from the script to really say whether it was purely the acting and/or that the character was written badly.) All that really didn't matter to me by the end because I loved everything else so much, especially <<Superman's son.>> I'm not normally a Superman fan but I'll definitely be first(ish) in line to see the next one in the theater.

I watched Memoirs of a Geisha this afternoon while I was doing my baking today, and I really enjoyed it. That movie is just chock full of pretty! The actors, the costumes, the visuals in general were just amazing. However, there really isn't a memorable performce in the entire film. I just sort of sat there thinking about how freakin' expensive those kimono must have been.

I rented Visitor Q before watching Audition and right now it is waiting to be watched. I can feel my eye twitching already.

My flatmate rented Memoirs of a Geisha, and... well, if either of us had read the book, or knew what was going on, I'm sure it would have been okay. However, neither of us had or did, and for most of the movie had no clue what was up. And then The Chairman admitted that >>he knew she was the little girl on the bridge, had fallen in love and set up the opportunity for her to be a companion of the night. << Which is icky. She was what, 10 at the time? We've since started calling it >>Memoirs of a kidnapped child prodded into non-prostitution by the man she loved<< which, while not quick and catchy, sums it up quite nicely.
Miss Clare- 12-06-2006
That's a pretty good synopsis of Memoirs of a Geisha. I read the book a long time ago, and I remember enjoying it up until the last 20 or so pages, when Arthur Golden seemed to just run out of steam and go with the "Reader, I married him" ending.
Again, because of my current crush on Daniel Craig, I took Sylvia out of the library. Now, I'm really not just saying this because I have a crush on him, but I found Ted Hughes far more sympathetic than Sylvia Plath. It's easy to say in retrospect that Plath was clearly very severely clinically depressed, but she was just so unpleasant! God, lady, your idea of pillow talk is "I tried to kill myself three years ago"? What the hell is wrong with you?!
molliewollie- 12-06-2006
Since my boyfriend had never seen it, and since he's been immersing himself in EA Sports' MLB 05, we rented Bull Durham and watched it last night. God, I love every single second of that movie and when I grow up I want to be Annie Savoy.

Crank with Jason Statham and I really really enjoyed it. The film is a complete adrenaline rush, a must for action enthusiasts. It was also funny, stark and original!

Watched Miami Vice tonight and now I really wish I'd seen it in the theaters as I'd originally planned. I was a big fan of the old tv show and I really liked the film version a lot. I thought it had the requisite Michael Mann feel to it (which it sure as hell should, since he did the film, too). I thought Gong Li was excellent. I actually thought Colin Farrell was the weakest link in the movie, and that they could've found someone better to play Crockett. I did think Jamie Foxx was fine as a more understated version of Tubbs. The music fit the grittier, darker mood of the movie quite well. I really liked the updated version of "In the Air Tonight," a nice homage.
Overall a worthy successor to the classic television show, and a pleasant surprise given a lot of what I'd read about the movie last summer, including comments on SF 2.0.

I grew up in a crossword loving household, so I just rented Wordplay and it was so much fun to watch. I really liked how they had the puzzles on the screen with the clues, so you could try to solve them along with the people.
Nothing better than a scene with Jon Stewart doing a puzzle and cursing Will Shortz at the same time.
The discussion of the election day 1996 puzzle was really fascinating - the designer made the puzzle as such so that either "clinton" or "bobdole" fit in before "elected".
I love movies like this and Spellbound.

I have a crazy-stupid obsession with Jared Leto right now and love Alicia Silverstone, so what could be better than The Cool and the Crazy? Just so ya'll know? Everything. Everything is better than The Cool and the Crazy. Root canals! Those are better than this movie. Except I don't generally get to see Jared Leto's ass during a root canal. Damn. Now it's a tie.

A couple of days ago, I watched She's the Man. Seriously. If it weren't for Tatum Channing running around either shirtless or in a wifebeater for the entire movie, I would have turned it off after about 10 minutes.
I thought that movie was hilarious. I had super low expectations for it, and the librarian said it would be funny, and, well, it was.
And, yes, Tatum Channing is VERY fun to look at.
