On the other side, I rented Somewhere In Time at the urging of my co-workers who told me I would "love" it after mentioning Jane Eyre was one of my favorite books. Good lord, the ending of that movie was incredibly stupid! And up until then, I didn't have too many problems with it. However, I do NOT understand it being upheld as some kind of romantic classic. Mostly, I think it's just proof of how gorgeous Jane Seymour is. I like romantic movies, but it was just over the top with the sappiness.

That's the way I felt about it. I think I was all of 13 when I saw it, at my mother's urging, and I saw the end and went, "Wait. What?? That was it?" I didn't like it, though I really enjoyed the rest of it. And DAMN. Jane is absolutely gorgeous.

I'll admit Somewhere in Time is my secret guilty favorite chick flick.

EVERY GUY HAS ONE!

A good cast, a period piece, interesting plot that doesn't descend in to the ludicrouis and before the genre became a tapestry of cutsey scenes to make a trailer.

Oh yeah, Jane Seymour was gorgeous in '79! I can totally see Superman risking casuality to get with her Turn of the Century hottness.

The Dude, you made me giggle, because my Somewhere in Time is also my husband's guilty pleasure chick flick.

Just got finished with The Phantom of the Opera, which I found to be very beautiful, but just an okay movie. The Phantom came across as pathetic and emo by the end of the movie, and his facial scars weren't even that horrible. Gerard Butler had a semi-mullet, and Patrick Wilson's flowing, girly hair made me laugh every time he came onscreen. I don't really understand why Emmy Rossum won awards for her performance in this; she has a really pretty singing voice, but I found her acting and expressions to be mostly vacant.

If you haven't read it yet, I HIGHLY recommend Cleo's Movie in 15 Minutes version of that movie, jcpdiesel21. It's hilarious, and comes with fantastic icons!

The 2003 live-action Peter Pan with Jeremy Sumpter and Rachel Hurd-Wood. It was surprisingly bittersweet...I almost cried at the end.

Sexy Beast, in which many were beastly but none were sexy. After just running through most of Deadwood it was a little bizarre to see Al Swearingen on the receiving end, so to speak. And while I understand that Ben Kingsley's character was a fearsome, loathsome, dangerous and unpredictable man the fact that he sounded like the Geico lizard just kept me cracking up.

I watched Alpha Dog last night and the script and movie kind of sucked balls, but my main query is thus: how long is Shawn Hatosy allowed to play 17-19 year olds? Isn't he like 32? Otherwise I thought JT did a good job with a crap material, but Ben Foster was just 20 differnent kinds of awesomely over the top.

Thanks for the tip, chibimanda! That was an excellent read, and more entertaining than the movie.

That whole movie is worth it for Ben Foster's scene with his boss when he yells "I will drag you down to hell with me" and they have to pull him from the room. And when he punches that girl.

That movie was so much fun to watch because of the incredible insanity.

Wait, Ben Foster's in it? Crap, now I may have to see it just for the pretty alone (him, Emile, and yes, Justin).

I watched The Namesake last week -- I've broken down and accepted that I like Kal Penn, but I didn't love the movie as much as I hoped I would; it felt really rushed and the pacing was way off. It seemed like they cut a lot out, but then I read about the book on Amazon and the reviewer said basically the exact same thing that I'd thought about the movie, so maybe they were doing the best they could with what they had. Worth seeing, though. (I'm now looking forward to Shantaram even more because Mira Nair's directing, and even more wicked pissed that it's postponed.)

Oh Alpha Dog. So much talent <JT's proved himself to be a good actor, Emile Hirsch and Ben Foster are garnering oscar buzz this year for a reason, I've always thought Shawn Hatosy was very underrated, Anton Yelchin is talented and hey look its Vincent Kartheiser and Adam from Joan of Arcadia!>, but so over the top.

I kinda loved it though. If only for Ben Foster actually deficating on a rug. And crazy ass Dominique Swain screeching at people.

Saw Waitress, which I really adored other than the last 5 minutes which descended into a pile of sappy ass crap that was totally unworthy of the very solid 90 minutes that preceded it. But I still recommend it. Keri Russel is incredibly good. The relationship between her and Nathan Fillion is just bittersweet and lovely. And it made me want to make pie at 2 in the morning.

I just rented The Thin Man and it was hilarious. How come no one ever told me how awesomely amazing that movie is? And I want to be Nora Charles so bad. Just hanging around a nice hotel, ordering sandwiches, wearing incredible dresses, and trading quips with William Powell. Sounds like the perfect life.

Are any of the sequels any good? 'Cause I may just have to check them out.

lifeguard- 12-03-2007
...and the drinking. The drinking! The Thin Man and Arthur should be watched as an old-fashioned Hollywood double feature.
