Ohhhhh Peaches- 10-28-2007
I rented Deep Red after reading about it in the Killer Scary Movies thread, and it did freak me out even though I was so tired by the end of it that I was practically nodding off. I left the lights on in my apartment when I went to bed. And, wow, a decade really took its toll on David Hemmings' face - he's barely recognisable as the guy from Blow-Up.

I was also inspired by the Killer Scary Movies thread; I got The Changeling from Netflix. It wasn't as scary as I hoped it would be, but there were some definitely creepy moments, and I thought the story was really interesting. Certain elements of the story reminded me of The Ring.

Tiner Spahkle One of my favorite movies of all time. My favorite scene is when they're dancing on the roof under the Coca cola sign and Doug's inside dancing, too. I cry at the end every time.

Because I'm reading it for the thousandth time in class, I Netflixed the Robert Redford Great Gatsby. Redford and Sam Waterston are pretty good, but I found Mia Farrow to be insanely over-the-top and annoying. Maybe that was just Daisy, though. (And Myrtle -- that girl was nuts.)

Heathers. I saw this once before but I was really young and didn't get all the jokes. Now that I'm older I think it's one of the funniest movies I've seen in a while, although I have to say the shift from comedy to thriller didn't quite work for me. I'm still trying to decide which quote is my favorite. I'm stuck between "Lick it up, baby. Lick. It. Up" or this exchange at the end:
Heather Doherty: "Veronica, you look like hell" Veronica: "Yeah? Well I just got back" |
I just rented Heathers, too! I'm not ashamed to admit it was because of the "I love my dead gay headmaster!" jokes that have been sweeping the internet. As it turns out, I don't think I'd ever actually seen that movie all the way through. I thought I had, but there were a lot of parts I didn't remember.

The Lives of Others is a really great film--acting, story, direction. Just superb. I was on the edge of my seat for the last half and couldn't figure out how it could possibly turn out well. Even though I adore Pan's Labyrinth, I think Lives deserved its Oscar win.

I rented Black Narcissus starring Deborah Kerr. I was interested in seeing it for a long time, but after her death, I pushed it up my Netflix queue.

It's one of my favourite ever films. Some of the casting is very dated, although its depiction of India (who's almost a character in the film) as somewhere the British never understood and never really controlled strikes home even today, especially in the ending - and was absolutely of the moment as the film was made in 1947, the year India and Pakistan gained independance. Apparently all the extras were recruited from the East End, where there were a few Indians living there due to the recent end of the war.
What is absolutely modern is its portrayal of sexuality, and it's beauty.
If you liked that, as well as Blimp I'd recommend Stairway to Heaven/A Matter of Life and Death (dated US-UK relations but looks astonishing and has a sophisticated take on life, love and neurology) and Peeping Tom, which Powell made on his own. Made the same year as Hitchcock's Psycho, this is far more disturbing and bizarre.

Peeping Tom is a great movie. In fact, I just realized that I need to get my copy back from my friend, who has said she is too scared to watch it.

Shooter, which I think can best be described as Mark Wahlberg wishes he was Matt Damon/Jason Bourne; The Fountain, which was stunning but somewhat confusing; Hidden, which was also confusing but I believe that's the point; and V for Vendetta, which was entertaining enough, I suppose.

Peeping Tom is great (and not just because the heroine is a librarian!). Unlike Psycho, there is a rational and believable explanation of the murderer's craziness which doesn't involve blaming his mother (still a cliche of true crime writing).
Basically, anything by Powell and Pressburger is worth watching especially the ones La G mentions and also The Red Shoes, the best ballet film ever and inspiration for several generations of aspiring dancers. Though it cries out to be seen on the big screen.

Shaun of the Dead. I laughed out loud through most of the movie (when I wasn't covering my eyes). My husband kept repeating, "this is one fucked-up movie", but he liked it, too.
When we got up this morning, I asked him if he slept well. He said he had, but he must have slept on his hip funny - then proceeded to do a zombie walk across the bedroom.
I love being married to a man who can make me laugh at 6:00 in the morning.

Transformers Mike Bay must never be allowed near a camera again.

You should be. I offer my sincere congratulations at landing such a catch.
I saw Idiocracy. I never even heard of it but TiVoed it because I saw Luke Wilson's name. I'm not saying it's Oscar-worthy but damn if I haven't told everyone I know to watch it for the funny. I laughed a lot at the whole stupidity premise. And even though Beef Supreme is the Wilson brother I don't know, he's definitely the hot-*test*-('"). Check him.

Some of my friends and I rented Volver last night. It was really good, but whoever wrote the back cover is on some serious crack because it did not describe the same movie we were watching.
