Surely- 08-30-2007
We've rented Wild Hogs, Blades of Glory and The Number 23 in the past week.
We saw Wild Hogs in the theater based on my mother's rapturous reviews. It sucked there, and it sucked while I was at home and could read instead of watch Bill Macy and Dr. Cox squander their considerable talent. I usually roll my eyes at manly men and their homosexual panic, but for some reason it offends me in this movie. Probably because there is nothing else of merit in the film (except maybe Kyle Glass karaoking to the Pussycat Dolls). I would ask how it has made so much money, but the fact that I hate it yet have see it twice answers that question easily. Oh, I guess there is a lot of worthwhile Harley porn, if you're into that sort of thing. So that's two things it has going for it.
I had already seen Blades of Glory too, but I have nothing but love for it. I noticed a lot more detail this time around, especially in their costumes. Every single hole in their costumes, even Chazz Michael Michaels' ripped leather pants, was filled in with flesh netting, which cracked me up for some reason. My boyfriend enjoyed it too. He does not find any movie that features Will Ferrell's stomach automatically awesome the way I do, so his praise is a little more legit.
I'm someone who finds Jim Carrey immensely appealing as a dramatic actor, so The Number 23 actually worked for me. Parts of it were very visually striking and there were some genuinely tense moments. It would have been better served by a little less exposition at the end, but overall I was surprised by how much it did not suck. It was not perfect, and there's some bad acting in the supporting roles, but overall I liked it.

Surely, you can't be serious.
(Sorry -- I've been waiting for years for a genuine opportunity to use that.)

I sort of watched this last weekend in and out of falling alseep to it while being sick (not sick to my stomach, just a cold). For some reason, I kept imagining John Ritter in this movie and it working so much better. I love Jim Carrey sporadically, Eternal Sunshine, Ace Ventura, Pet Detective (not Nature Calls), and even Bruce Almighty but he didn't work well here. but he worked as >>the killer<< maybe because I could imagine him >>obsessing about someone and killing her and writing a book about it and then forgetting all too well. Also, do ACO make enough to live in Arts & Crafts cottages from the 20's?<< Cute son.

Flushed Away, for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th times this week because our roommate hadn't seen it, then her boyfriend hadn't seen it, and her best friend hadn't seen it.
I have nothing but ongoing love for that little movie. "Henchfrogs!"
Next in the queue are Wit (because it has Emma!), and Titanic, because it's another title our roommate hasn't seen.
I expect someone to chime in for renting Blades of Glory this weekend, though. And I have my new special edition of Hamlet that I haven't watched yet.

Let's see...in the past few days we watched two Hitchcock films, The Lady Vanishes and Suspicion. Cary Grant is so good at playing faintly scary SOBs. Kinda sexy as a jerk. I had forgotten how much I like Michael Redgrave in The Lady Vanishes.
Then last night we watched the director's cut of The Blues Brothers. My husband had never ever seen this movie. I told him it is a movie that has something for everyone. Musical numbers, dancing, comedy, car chases, stuff blowing up and Illinois Nazis. What is not to love? He enjoyed it. He said it seemed like it was a movie where the writers/director came up with every single crazy/fun idea they ever had and said, "let's put it in a movie" and no one stopped them.
Indeed.
I believe tonight we are going to watch 40 year old Virgin.

I'm pretty sure the car chase was designed as being so enormous that one would have to specifically be trying to top it in order to top it.
It's awesome.

It had the most destroyed cars ever in a single film -until they made the sequel.
That is dedication my friend.

I just got around to seeing The New World, and I really enjoyed it. I was always a bit dubious about Colin Farrell's acting skills, but I though he was really good in this. I just loved how beautiful the whole movie was. Terrence Malick's movies may not always have a clear story, but boy do they bring the eye candy!
Also Q'Orianka Kilcher is one lucky chick! She had Colin Farrell AND Christian Bale macking on her. Although I'm sure it was a BIT awkward considering she was just 14 when the film was shot.

So you're saying Blues Brothers 2000 at one point held some kind of record? That ain't right.

I just got done watching Vacancy, holy crap, surprisingly scary, but I find the whole concept of >>snuff films<< deeply creepifying, and is a big reason Mute Witness is one of my favorite scary movies. I think it got criticized for biting off so many other horror films through history (Jason/Michael Myers/The Stepfather/Texas Chainsaw/Psycho) but I loved that aspect and felt like it was more homage/critique than stealing. I liked that it worked more by being taught, tense, and creepy than gross and gory.
Also frightening? Luke Wilson bloaty moon face!

There was someone on this planet that hasn't seen The Blues Brothers yet?? It's a very cool movie. All kinds of music heros, car chases, a great line, "We're on a mission from God," Carrie Fisher shooting Jake, Minnie the Moocher, singing at the country bar, John Candy, the list goes on and on.

Colin didn't have a problem with that! ;)

I just finished watching The 40 Year old Virgin. (I had never seen it)
The ending? WTF. I was rendered speechless.
truecrystal- 08-31-2007
Just watched Pan's Labyrinth and am still blown away. It's one of the few movies I've seen in a long time where I felt like there was serious dedication to telling a story visually as opposed to just stringing pictures together and hoping a story would fall out.
It also made me want to check out Devil's Backbone to see more of del Toro's work. I've only seen his Blade II which was awesome as all Blade movies. And I'm not kidding.

Heeeeeeeeeee. Seeing that in the theater has been one of my favorite movie experiences. Everyone was kind of shifting around, getting ready to go, and when Steve >>just lets loose with "When the moooooon is in the seventh house", everybody was, as you said, rendered speechless. << It was so awesome and unexpected. We were all crying with laughter when we left the theater.

Aw. I loved Flushed Away. Hugh Jackman is so adorable as a tuxedoed rat, and the henchrats and frogs were awesome. "But it's Millicent! Millicent Bystander!" Everytime I think of that, I crack myself up.
I haven't seen The Blues Brothers, which is pretty pathetic, since I'm actually from Joliet.
