On topic: watched Hot Fuzz last night and have total love for this film. The acting, the camera work, the story...fantastic. I laughed all the way through it I think.

I love this movie. Just saw it for the first time the other night and I have to agree that it is absolutely fantastic. Great everything, and the crazy British characters were spot on every single village/hamlet movie.

Along with this, in the past two weeks we have rented Zodiac (good, a little too long); Number 23 (eh); The Good Shephard (should have been a movie of the week, but the acting was pretty good); and Pan's Labryinth. Oh my lord, what a stunning, incredibly lovely and heartbreaking film! I find myself thinking about it throughout the day, <<trying to figure out what was real and what was imaginary. I can see a very, very clear argument for both. >>I now want to rent The Devil's Backbone, which I understand is the prequel of sorts to Pan's.

I think chronologically The Devil's Backbone takes place after Pan's Labyrinth, though they both show Del Toro's fascination with the Spanish Civil War, something he feels is imperative for his Mexican countrymen to learn about and have a context for. (I'm sure he's quite pleased people in other countries have noticed) But it's really amazing, and it was something that opened my eyes to what this guy is capabe of.

I watched Miss Potter on the weekend and was a little disappointed. Renee Zellweger tried way too hard to look British, with extremely stiff facial expressions, and the storyline lacked a lot of, well, story.

Still, it was an easy watch and somewhat enjoyable.

I watched The Fisher King today. I liked it a lot-- it was really funny and sweet. I usually find Robin Williams a bit annoying, but I actually thought he was good in this and I liked his character. >>I couldn't pay attention at all to the scene after the one where Parry gets attacked under the Brooklyn(?) Bridge. Jack and Anne just kept going about their relationship and I was like, "Okay, okay, but WHAT HAPPENED TO PARRY?"<<

I know the film wasn't exactly accurate in terms of what her family and life was like. The Potters were a much more stoic sober bunch of people. They didn't even celebrate Christmas. Not to mention that Beatrix Potter wasn't exactly a ten. But the film-makers decided to go for a more fluffy approach.

I think that movie and Citizen Kane may be the two that flip flop most as my favorite movie. Not that The Fisher King is anywhere on the level of Citizen Kane, I think, in terms of overall quality, but the story resonates with me in much the same way.

So I put in Bend It Like Beckham. Now I no longer feel the need to go huddle in my room, hoping nothing near me explodes. I just want some Indian food!

After watching that movie, whenever I see "Santa Clara," I say to myself "Santa Clara" with a British accent like Keira K. Have no idea why that's stuck with me, but it did. It was the first time I saw JR-M so that could be part of it.

Haven't rented any movies lately, but purchased Reno 911! and started watching the first season. It's still hilarious! It said was uncensored, but Dangle's butt is still blurred out. Maybe the commentary?

The Lookout: now this is how you do a thriller, Disturbia. Another great performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and featuring Jeff Daniels as a sassy and sharp blind person, a nearly unrecognizable Matthew Goode as a thug, and Isla Fisher as a character with the ridiculous name of Luvlee Lemons. I thought the story moved along at a nice pace, and I liked how Chris' condition is always there, yet the movie doesn't hit you over the head with it in every single action that he makes. Everything was wrapped up maybe a little too quickly at the end, but that's a minor quibble with such an entertaining movie.

I was surprised at how disappointed I turned out to be that it wasn't up to the bar Gordon-Levitt set with Brick. But it was nice enough, on its own terms. I remember being grateful <<that his brain damage wasn't "erased" in a twist ending>>.

I thought it was good and yet a little underwhelming at the same time, I'm not sure why. Although my favorite part was >>when the bumbling deputy showed up at just the wrong time--you totally knew he was going to bite it the moment he first appeared in the movie, because that's what bumbling deputies with wives and babies do, but I was impressed that he took down most of the crew first.<<

I loved The Lookout and will be owning it as soon as it goes in that cheapo pre-viewed bin. Quite honestly I liked it more than the incredibly overrated Brick.

I rented The Host, a kick ass little movie, which starts out as a kind of satirical comedy-horror film and slowly gets creepier and sadder as it goes along, without losing it's sense of humor. Shot really beautifully too. The CGI creature also starts out very cartoony and becomes more palpable and real as it goes along.

I'm finishing up the Altman deathmarch.

isiscloud- 08-23-2007
I need to see all Altman. I have seen The Player, Gosford Park (and have the game), Popeye...and that's about all. Not sure if I want to see A Prairie Home Companion. Maybe it would take away from the real thing? I don't know or indeed support LLo.

I just got Cold Comfort Farm from Netflix.

Heeeee. I want Kate Beckinsale's wardrobe. And Rufus Sewell was so good looking!

Zodiac. Good grief I was bored to sleep. Literally. Like I fell asleep three times.
