I've just finished watching Children of Men and wow... it just was so intense. The abruptness of the ending did make me a lil' bit pissed of, though.

| Man, I can't remember the last time I saw what I could call gratuitous nudity. |
Mario Bello in History of Violence was sort of randomly wedged in there.

| Yeah, "The Devil's Advocate" was better. But I like "The Astronaut's Wife" if only because its so bad its good. And it has pretty people. And the hilarious line "You know what I though of up there? Your cunt."....Calm down, Johnny. |
No, that's just it, he actually says "vagina"! It's this freakish, sexy moment, and then he just...says "vagina." I'm torn between squick and lust and hysterical laughter at that part, seriously.
And my friend hates Maria Bello; he gripes that "she's naked in like every freakin' movie!" (And he's a straight male.)
I rented The Lives of Others from work and I'm watching it tomorrow night; if it was good enough to beat Pan's Labyrinth for Best Foreign Film, it's probably damn good. (Because, er, I'm one of those that loved it.)

I watched The Holiday on the weekend and liked it more than I thought I would.
Also recently watched Georgia Rule which was pretty bad. It was so not the comedy it was advertised as in the trailer.

My mother is currently making me watch the Elvis movie with Jonathan Rhys Meyers (or "that Irish kid," as she calls him), and I gotta admit, he looks pretty hot. He's got the hair and the guitar and...um, wow. I have to go lie down now.

Its actually a REALLY surprisingly good movie. It got nominated for a bunch of Emmys (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers got the Globe and would have gotten the emmy but he was up against Geoffrey Rush). The only part I disliked was Rose McGowan as Ann Margaret.

Yesterday we watched Widow's Peak which was very funny and Irish. The plot kinda threw me but in a good way. Tonight we watched Code 46 which was unusual and very interesting. I liked it much more than I thought I would. And hey it isn't often you get to see female frontal nudity so if you are looking for that in cinema, here is your chance. It is a sad film and the scenery is fantastic to look at -in a barren kind of way.

Code 46, with Tim Robbins and Samantha Morton? Good movie: the whole sterile-dystopian future thing seems a little played out by now, but the plot had enough innovative aspects to help you overlook that. Michael Winterbottom movies are always interesting.

Oooh I kind of love Code 46 and think the love scene in it is one of the hot-*test*-('") I've ever seen, on premise alone. I may have purchased the $4 dollar previously viewed copy for that reason alone. I should watch it again because I remember thinking the plot thematically had a lot in common with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and can not for the life of me remember why.

Disturbia: Shia LeBeouf was good as usual and I liked the slick way that they updated the Rear Window scenario for a more modern audience and the younger generation, but it didn't quite work. It devolved into a slasher-type movie in the last portion, which was disappointing, given that they had done a good job building up suspense during the first half. David Morse should never again grow his hair out into a curly, pouffy mullet. For the most part, given their actions in the overall scope of the film, Ashley (who was not as mind-numbingly hot as the movie made her out to be) and Ronnie were mostly pointless.

Reality Bites. I really liked the characters played by Janeane Garofalo and Ben Stiller. The soundtrack wasn't too bad either. Everything else . . . no thanks.
Infamous. Far from a comedy but quite funny in some parts. I liked how the movie dealt with Truman Capote's social life in addition to his research for In Cold Blood (if I recall correctly, Capote was pretty much all about Truman interviewing the prisoners). Occasionally there were some slow-moving scenes but as a whole I liked it a lot more than I did Capote.

I think I watched and rented two movies that could not be any more different if they tried: Babe and Children Of Men. I had seen the first before, and a friend was visiting this weekend and she had never seen it before. I knew the second was not her sort of film at ALL so I watched it after she left. Good movie, but not one I need to see again. It was just insanely intense, and so realistic that afterwards I had to watch something to cheer me up.
So I put in Bend It Like Beckham. Now I no longer feel the need to go huddle in my room, hoping nothing near me explodes. I just want some Indian food!

I also watched Disturbia and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was more of a winking self-aware homage to Rear Window than any kind of serious remake. I was surprised how thoroughly I enjoyed it, and frankly I really liked that the hot chick was a buttah face, it makes a kind of sense when the lead is not your traditionally good looking stud, but is more charmingly sexy. I'm kind of in love with Shia LeBeouf for making mainstream movies that don't suck.
OTOH, I was underwhelmed by Volver, Pepe was every bit as outstanding as people made her out to be, and bad Almodovar is still pretty good, but it was just sort of meh to me and all the big plot points were very telegraphed and thus lacked punch.
Finally I watched Inland Empire, hee, David Lynch's brain is a very scary place and three hours inside it may well be a bit too long, but it was otherwise amazing. Bunnies, and whores, and gangsters oh my! It's like it takes Mulholland Drive one or 12 steps beyond.

Idlewild. I ordered this movie from Blockbuster Online ages ago and was surprised when it finally showed up. It was surprisingly good. Andre 3000 is an adorable dork, The Other One Whose Name I Can't Remember is a good dancer and quite funny, Terence Howard is delightfully crazy (I get from the Celebrity Dumb Quotes thread that he may not be acting so much there, unfortunately) and Macy Gray is a total bitch. I ordered it mainly for the singing and dancing but surprised myself by singing buckets of tears at the end. The ending felt a little tacked on, though. >>Fake Angel brings Percy out of his shell and convinces him to go to Chicago and then gets shot and dies and that turns him into a singing, dancing machine then? The hell? <<
Skyblade- 08-19-2007
Yeah, I found the ending a little jarring in that respect; >>Andre 3000's wedding/funeral/attempted suicide thing was fascinatingly eerie, and then he gets a knock on the door, moves to Chicago, and we're treated to a (Way too long) musical number where he's playing the piano and women are crawling on him. I'm glad life goes on dude, but it didn't seem to go with what happened ten minutes ago, especially since you get the impression his character was rather shy.<<
