Right now the TWOPers seem to be busy fanwanking ways in which none of the characters except Jack are actually bisexual (So Owen went home with the girl and the guy in Everything Changes? One experience doesn't make you bi! So, the Torchwood Hub says he's slept with guys before? Maybe he was just using them for sex, or it was a power thing. That doesn't make you bi!" So Ianto cried when Jack was dead and then snogged him? He's obviously just faking it all to set up a revenge for Jack for killing his girlfriend!").

Yay, got the newest DWM today. Lots or Torchwoody (and JB) goodness.

Those Twoppers could not be more wrong. Did you guys not realise that there is discussion out there about how Ianto might not be entirely heterosexual? Apparently some people even write stories about his not-heterosexuality. I am shocked. Shocked I tell you.

Had the guy who asked the question in your link ever been on the internet before?

My personal favorite TWoP comment about Torchwood went something like "Torchwood doesn't deserve TWoP" several weeks ago. Oh, the entitlement.

Although I am in agreement that many of the characters could have been more consistently developed...although not so much that we need to know the exact sexuality of everyone on the show and we need to know it now.

There are days when I want to lose my usual sense of calm and scream at a few of these people, "It is just a feckin' TV show."
But I am sure they would hunt me down and try and eat my pets or something.

Maybe I am just too much of an amateur when it comes to TV watching. I just enjoy it for what it is. Snark on it now and then and not expect it to be James Joyce or Tolstoi.

But everything MUST be spelled out! ALWAYS! In words of one syllable, from the very beginning! Therein lies the sercret of great and interesting TV! Sheesh.

See, I love the fact that we don't know exactly what's going on with... well, with anything really. I agree that a lot of the characters are underdeveloped (I think someone upthread mentioned that, unlike US TV writers, this lot weren't used to writing for ensemble shows, but hopefully they'll improve), but honestly, there's very few TV shows which are brilliant right off the bat. A slightly ropey first season is pretty much par for the course while the writers try and find their voice.

Another fairly common complaint over at TWoP is that everyone at Torchwood is either selfish, incompetent, horrible or (usually) all three. Maybe, but a bunch of super-competent, perfect individuals would make for deeply boring viewing. I especially like the fact that Jack, despite his awesome bad-assery, is clearly a pretty crap leader - he has the charisma, but can't manage people at all (see the last episode). I'm really interested to see at what point they pick up the next season - whether it will be minutes or days after the end of this one. >>Does this mean that Owen's in command now?<< Because that can only end in tears...

Yes - only true professionals can treat all TV with the contempt and condescencion it deserves.

One of my little pleasures right now is re-watching the episodes having seen the finale, and picking up on things I didn't pay attention to or that didn't seem important earlier on. (Like feeling really sorry for Ianto -- damn, how many times is that guy going to get beaten up? No wonder he needs Captain Jack's Sexual Healing tm.)

Ticking off the box, we now know that Bilis is an evil gay! Posted just because the way it's said cracks me up.

That's been my stance from the get-go: Torchwood's first season is bound to be shaky at best, painful at worst, but if they can survive it there's a shot at turning into something really interesting. In the meantime I'm willing to give it a reasonable amount of leeway as long as they keep trying to make a better show as they go.

Which reminds me, I really need to watch the rest of 'em... I've been busy (and sick, dammit) so I haven't even watched They Keep Killing Suzie yet. Argh.

Which is consistent with his Doctor Who appearances. In Parting of the Ways, he only manages to persuade about 3 people to actually help him fight the Daleks whereas the Doctor or a Proper Companion would have raised an army in about 5 minutes.

What? TWoPers will spend ages arguing the cause that a straight character could possibly be bisexual, and now a show comes along that hands them four bisexual characters all in one go and they're trying to argue that they're not bi? With the exception of Owen they've all snogged a member of the same sex, and even with Owen it's implied he's slept with other men. Where could the doubt possibly be? Just sit back and enjoy it people.

What amuses me the most is how they keep yabbering on about how unrealistic it is not taking into account that we're meant to be perfectly accepting about Jack being from the 51st century and immortal. Nobody has a problem with that but any same sex activity gives them the vapours.

psammead- 01-07-2007
There are some people who just don't deserve access to the intwerwebs. Or tv. Or indeed the gift of sight.

polarbear- 01-07-2007
What amused me was that someone had actually calculated the odds of three bisexual individuals on the same team (I think they were counting Gwen and ?Owen as straight) as 200 to 1, which really isn't that unlikely. Of course, then people chimed in debating those figures, and they ended up with a final guess of 800 to 1, which I think only tells us that some people have thought way too hard about this.

That should be the TWoP motto.
