It's just a little more than a month until 8/8/08!

While I enjoy the Winter Olympics (where we're guaranteed to get at least a couple medals), I really like the Summer ones for the excitement, the swimmers and the overall drama of the Olympics games.
It's all going to be going down in the middle of the night here, so either I take on wonky sleep patterns, or hope the morning news doesn't get all spoiler-y. I'm thinking the former.

Americans seem to be breaking lots of records lately. It's weird how the US swimming trials are going on now, while NBC said that the Australian trials were in March.
On a more shallow note, Phelps is kind of a butterface. It's going to be so weird to not see Ian Thorpe.

I used to be hugely into the Olympics back in the 70's and early 80's, when I was younger. But I haven't taken much of interest in it in years and years. I'm not sure exactly why, either. It just doesn't resonate with me any longer, I guess.

It's the new swimsuits. They're so technologically advanced that records are falling everywhere.
I hope NBC keeps their promise about showing almost all the games. Between 4 channels and the internet, they should be able to do so.
The Lady of Shalott- 06-30-2008
I don't remember how good NBC was about showing the games four years ago, but frankly I can't stand most of the commentators so I tend to just turn the volume on very low and watch. And as far as I'm concerned men's swimming and diving doesn't NEED commentary. Mostly just awed silence.
I'm looking forward to the track and field events, myself.

Interesting article about the new suits.I say screw all this technology and make them swim naked.

Apparently the new suits make you swim even faster than naked, which seems so ridiculously advanced.

I don't care about speed. I just want to see the swimmers naked.

I just hope that NBC doesn't murder the opening ceremonies, like they do every four years. At least time around there won't be Katie Couric trying to make small talk.
Carrie Ann- 07-01-2008
I found out yesterday that both of my friends made it onto their respective Olympic teams! They're a married couple, and they'll be playing for New Zealand (she plays field hockey, he plays basketball). Unfortunately... I probably won't see any of their games since I'm in the US. Anyone know whether there will be better coverage on a satellite or digital cable channel?
Diego Zanzibar- 07-01-2008
Sorry that I can't answer your question, but congrats to your friends, Carrie Ann!

I am SO! EXCITED! that the Olympics will be next month. I love the Olympics, both summer and winter. I used to like summer better because I enjoy watching gymnastics and swimming events, but in 2006 discovered the magic of curling, so winter currently has a slight edge. I am such a nerd about the Olympics that I will probably be regularly listening to John Williams' "Bugler's Dream/Olympic Fanfare and Theme" complete with drum motions from now until the closing ceremonies. This will be my first Olympics with a DVR, so I look forward to fast forwarding through all of the annoying commentary.
I will be on the lookout for regular Ninja Warrior competitors Jordan Jovtchev and Shinsuke Nagasaki in gymnastics and trampoline, respectively.
The Lady of Shalott- 07-01-2008
I'm pretty sure the DVR was made for the Olympics.
Also, CURLING IS THE BOMB. When they had the Tim Horton's Brier a while ago my friends and I got drunk and watched, like, seven straight hours of curling. It was much more exciting than it sounds.
molliewollie- 07-01-2008
I love the Olympics like it's my job, but I will not be watching any of it this time.
*sigh* Hurry up, 2010!
And yes, curling is superfantasticawesomeness. I watched way too much curling during the Torino games.
