I had a bit of broken tooth related insomnia, so was awake to listen to the radio commentary for the women's 10k open water race. I can't believe some of the shenanigans people were getting up to in the race - grabbing opponent's ankles or elbowing each other.

Fair play to the Brits though - silver and bronze after swimming for just under two hours.

Yay our first medal ....Bronze Shachar Zubari

I managed to catch the very last few minutes of that race this morning before I went for a shower, and I was gutted when the Russian woman managed to overtake our girls! I mean, silver and bronze is great, but I think the exploits of the rest of Team GB have spoilt me because now I expect us to get golds!

It looked really painful - even the thought of swimming for so long made me feel a bit sick. And that was before I knew about the shenanigans!

I was off sick yesterday, which sucked, but it meant that I got to watch the Olympics all day. Absolutely fantastic performances from so many athletes! I'm cheering the Brits like a complete loon, but I also loved the 1500m bronze from Nick Willis of NZ (my NZ performance of the Games, so far), and we picked up the women's windsurfing gold this morning as well.

That Madison cycling race just about finished me off. It was SO complicated! How do those guys compete like that, going flat-tack, and also manage to calculate which team has done what and what they need to do in order to win? Mental!

The BMX trials were on this morning. That's the funniest sport of the Olympics, without question.

...(Mathias Steiner) had such a sweet backstory, he wasn't a successful weightlifter in lighter categories and moved to the heavier one and started doing better, then his wife died and he said that since then he has lifted every time for her. ... When he got to his medal he held a picture of his wife in his hand, it was so sweet.

What is it with heartbreaking stories at this Olympics? Have I just not been paying attention before? Ian Millar, the anchor of the Canadian showjumping team, was widowed a few months ago and apparently he carried his late wife's picture in his jacket pocket as he competed. And finally, in his ninth Olympics, won a medal. I didn't know whether to jump up and down or bawl, and I don't think he did either.

Poor LoLo Jones! She had the race in her hands. I'm amazed she was able to still finish after clipping a hurdle. I now must find an olympic genetic pairing match for her because she's frickin' gorgeous.

Jeremy Wariner?

Oh my god, Bolt is unbelievable! What a run.

epudom- 08-20-2008
Damn, Usain Bolt is just awesome.

kindred- 08-20-2008
Holy crap. That was the most amazing thing I have EVER seen, ever ever ever. Two one-hundredths carved off the world record! Poor Michael Johnson - he didn't think that Bolt would beat him.

That was so awesome. I snuck down to our staff cafe to watch it on the big screen and discovered that 150 colleagues had the same idea! We all burst into applause at the end and then had the stupidest grins on our faces. That was just a joy to watch.

Jesus H. Garcia- 08-20-2008
I think he's part cheetah. Seriously. He's superhuman.

kindred- 08-20-2008
They should enter him into a sprinting breeding programme, stat.

Lind- 08-20-2008
That was incredible.

I'm so pleased for Tasha Danvers in the 400 hurdles - especially since she was previously written off as a prospect for taking time out to have a baby. Suck it, sexist athletics establishment.

epudom- 08-20-2008
It would seem that Jamaica is kicking everyone's butts in the speed events. Whatever they've got going on down there is obviously good.

And an unexpected bronze for Tasha Davers - great job for the mother of a small child!

Royale- 08-20-2008
Great for Danvers, I'm so happy for her.

I really love Bolt. For some reason I don't care when he showboats and poses for the cameras. He is as awesome as he thinks he is.

To me it comes across as playful exuberance more than arrogance, which makes it endearing to me. I watch him and I laugh and cheer for him.

And, of course, he really is that awesome...
