I can't believe it! Amazing day again. I really thought she was nowhere but she just flew down the home straight. Best Olympics ever! (Seriously for us it is).

Yay for Jonathan Horton! And I'm pleased Hambuechen came away with the bronze after just missing out before.

I realized after watching women's gymnastics, that it's fortunate for the US that I'm not an athlete. Because if I were, I'm not sure I'd be as good a sport as Nastia or Alicia. In fact, I'd have made a real ass of myself attempting to throw down with some judges in teal blazers. Hair would have been pulled, obscenities would have been screamed, Jerry Springer audiences would have been impressed. I'd have made the Karolyis look like they'd graduated from Miss Manners Academy.

I loathe trash talking in sports, so I don't blame the Russian pole vaulter for being pissed that the American pole vaulter was talking smack. (I can't spell either lady's name, so I'm not going to even attempt it.) The Russian woman broke the world record...suck it up, American lady.

When will Olympians learn to not talk smack? It never ends well.

Normally. But it worked out well for Cassius Clay in 1960.

That whole pole vaulting thing was unreal. The US chick has only been doing it for 4 years! I also can't stand her coach. What an asshole. After she won silver he wouldn't even look at her.

What a dick that guy is. The announcers even commented on it. She finished second to the best pole vaulter in the world. Not something to be ashamed of.

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with the wiring of people like that? I just don't get it.

I'm so happy that Jonathan Horton got an individual medal! After his awesome energy during the team competition, he seemed so downbeat during the all-around competition when he wasn't performing as well, so this is a nice ending to his games.

Oh, that's got to suck for Lolo Jones to trip on that ninth hurdle when she was in the lead.

Agent Sculder- 08-19-2008
As bad as I felt for Lolo, I loved seeing Dawn Harper's reaction. She was just so excited to win. You could tell she did not expect to do that well. Her big smile was so lovely to see.

Congrats to Shawn and Nastia on balance beam. I preferred Nastia's routine (I'm a sucker for her long lines and artistry), but both of them were clearly the top two in the event. And a big yay to Jonathan Horton for that INSANE high bar routine. I have no idea how anyone can pull off those huge release skills like that.

Sometimes I watch the not-so-watched sports and I saw the weightlifting yesterday (+105) and the winner (Mathias Steiner) had such a sweet backstory, he wasn't a successful weightlifter in lighter categories and moved to the heavier one and started doing better, then his wife died and he said that since then he has lifted every time for her. No one thought he was going to manage 12kg's more than he has ever lifted to beat the Russian for gold, but he did, and he was so emotional it was so funny to watch this huge guy jump up and down. When he got to his medal he held a picture of his wife in his hand, it was so sweet.

Poor LoLo Jones! She had the race in her hands. I'm amazed she was able to still finish after clipping a hurdle. I now must find an olympic genetic pairing match for her because she's frickin' gorgeous.

The reaction of the silver medal winner from Australia was priceless!

Little Natalia Watch: Chinese gymnast Cheng Fei's father would travel 5 hours by boat to watch her train.

I'm happy Shawn Johnson won a gold even if she's a little gymbot. I want to see her loose her shit with happiness. Good on ya, kid. (Even if I thought Nastia's beam routine was better).

Raised by wolves- 08-20-2008
Nastia's was better, but she lost of points in difficulty. Nastia's was a 6.7 to Shaun's 7.0, so even though I thought Nastia's was better, she would have to have beaten Shaun by a tremendous amount to win. Good on both of them for again taking gold and silver.

I do feel a little bad for Nastia though because she seems overlooked since the marketing machine is heavily into Shaun. Don't make her share her Wheaties box! She earned it.

Hee, she was great. In her post-race interview, she kept on saying 'OMG, did you see me at the start' and 'is this happening?' So cute.

OK the BMX course looks like they're racing around Candyland.
