May I just say, old people represent! Dara Torres, 31, winning three silvers! The Romanian who won the women's marathon at 38! Oksana Chusovitina, age 33, winning gymnastics silver! Even Jason Lezak is in his early 30s (33?).

Ian Millar, aged 61, silver.

41, in fact!

I hate saying it, but I think judging was worse in the Cold War.

It was. "And a 4.5 from the East German judge!" That was real, back in the day.

See: 1972 men's basketball final, U.S. vs. Soviets; and

Evander Holyfield's 1984 "loss" in the boxing competition. That's one of the few times I can think of that Howard Cosell was at a loss for words, IIRC.

As for these Olympics: I've become a huge Team USA softball fanboy.

Is it just me, or did Ian Thorpe look awfully glum in the audience when the American team clinched Michael Phelps' eighth gold?

Maybe because Australia got second. I think that people forget that that's where he's from and so that's who he'll be supporting.

Ever notice that the Olympics tend to bring out the hyperbole a lot.

I also feel, and this is just my perception of the situation of course, that Nastia isn't being given her just due in the American media. Everything is still about Shawn even though Nastia is the AA champion. And now comes word that she may have to share her Wheaties box with Shawn. WTF?!?

So, I spent the weekend amusing my family with ideas for an Olympic athlete breeding program. It started with "What if Nastia Luikin and Sasha Artemov got married and had tiny, perfect gymnast babies?" I drew a blank at Michael Phelps, though. "I don't know. Ariel the mermaid?" But the zenith of my breeding program ideas came while watching rowing. They have to improve the Winklevoss stock, so twins Winkle Ty and Winkle Cam should naturally marry the Evers-Swindell sisters. However, the resulting rowers would have to be listed with only one name, because Evers-Swindell-Winklevoss would not fit on the results more than once.

Maybe Dara Torres and Michael Phelps? She obviously has good genes!

Katie Hoff? Natalie Coughlin? Britta Stefan? Eamon Sullivan?

Natalie Coughlin? Britta Stefan?

Dibs!

Coughlin is probably my all time Olympics crush. Stefan is my favorite this year.

I still think Phelps and Hoff have something going on.

kindred- 08-18-2008
Thorpe was interviewed by the BBC at the start of the Olympics and asked about Phelps's plans to try to win 8 gold medals. He was pretty disparaging about it and said that Phelps wouldn't manage it. That may have accounted for his glum expression later on...

Well, we may get to see something like that one day since Bart Connor and Nadia have a kid. Although, I suppose he/she could decide not to have anything to do with gymnastics, and after this year, I would not blame them.

And while I understand people not liking Bela Karolyi because he benefited from a lot of these shenanigans in the past, I think it's a good thing he's bitching about it. If no one complains, nothing will get fixed. Granted, I'd rather someone less biased was out there making noise so people stopped saying it's just Americans complaining. I'd be upset for any one who got screwed over like this.

I really don't understand why they can't give out two gold medals if there's a tie though. I think they will give out dual silvers or bronzes.

I've decided to discount the Chinese from now on in my personal medals count for the gymnastics. So Beth got silver and Nastia got gold.

I think this is going to be my new mindset. The underage thing is really bothering me on the uneven bars final because it's Nastia that's being beaten out by the 14 year old. Nastia, who would have made the team in 2004 but couldn't because she was 14. The underage Chinese girls should have to wait the 4 years that she did.

That I've noticed, the IOC cares about two things. Their bribes, and doping. Things like fair scoring only matter if the crowd actually look to be in a lynching mood.

Interestingly, there has been virtually no coverage of this 'underage gymnasts' story in the UK.

There hasn't been much here (Australia) either, from what I've seen, but I haven't been watching religiously though. I remember one new story about some dodginess in the shooting, but it wasn't a big deal.
