I really don't like the men's floor exercise. It just looks so...awkward.
ETA: I can't believe Alicia Sacramone placed 4th! That is such bullshit. |
I have to say, I think that pommel horse is the most awkward looking event.
I agree, the women's vault judging was totally suspect there. Poor Alicia was completely robbed.

anyone else have the urge to watch Gymkata?
As uncomfortable as I am with Women's Gymnastics (when they're sneaking 8th graders out there), I have the utmost respect for men's. I can barely do a chin-up, so I can't even conceive of the upper body strength it takes to do a rings routine.

With such jacked up scoring, I wonder if the US will lodge a formal complaint about the judging. Because that was ridiculously unfair. I have even more respect for Nastia and Shawn now because the fact they were able to win the all around given the fact the judges seem to predisposed to the Chinese is a miracle.

I think Bela needs to shut up. He's totally playing to the camera. If NBC hadn't given him a spot as a whatever the hell it is he's supposed to be, I don't think he'd give a damn about Alicia's heartbreak.
I don't understand why a tie in silver means there's no bronze medal.
The Dude- 08-17-2008
Whatever keeps Bela away from kids.
big chicken- 08-17-2008
What I want to know is why Bela's been banned from the competition floor.

I believe it because the top three competitors get medals, not the top three scores. You could conceivably have three gold medals if three gymnasts got the highest score.
Binky- 08-17-2008
The judging irregularities have made watching the gymnasts less fun. I mean, I'm no expert, but I know 'falling on ass = bad" and now it seems like "Chinese gymnast falling on ass = less bad than any other nationality's gymnast falling on ass".

Shelly-Ann Fraser is pretty much the cu-*test*-('") person in the world. I love her braces. Her smile looks exactly like mine did when I was 11.

That's what soured me on the figure skating in the winter games, which sucks because I really enjoy the artistry of that sport.

Is it just me, or did Ian Thorpe look awfully glum in the audience when the American team clinched Michael Phelps' eighth gold?

I'm in total agreement.

Michael Phelps and his mom and sisters make me aw. They all clearly adore each other and its nice. I also am really happy for Phelps, he just seems really nice and gracious (his off camera embarassed laughing when Costas was going on about him was great). Plus I have to love him for this alone. You can just see Wintour itching to do a makeover.
However during that immediate interview he did with Bob Costas I feared for him. Bob was shooting him the crazy intense fatal attraction eyes for a couple of minutes there. |
The best way to deal with Costas when he's like that is throw a baseball behind him and run.

I think it's because they're keeping more than half their body weight as waist-height. That's just...insane. Mechanically the upper body is good at swinging, but trying to keep the lower half elevated and out of the way at the same time is not a graceful thing.

That vault judging was indeed bullshit. Poor Alicia, at the least she should console herself with knowing she was robbed.
I was kinda thrilled and tickled by the Jamaicans sweeping the 100m. I have a weird love for people who don't win gold but still medal if a countryman wins gold. Even if they're not the reason their anthem is being played on the medal stand, they still get to hear it. My Olympic quirk I guess.
It was really fun to see some rowing on the US national broadcast, even if only because of the gold. Truefax: a co-worker of mine at my last job competed in two Olympics in rowing and actually won a bronze medal in Barcelona.

I wonder how fast Bolt would be if he actually had proper form and didn't jack around at the end of the race.
I'm glad the whole Michael Phelps thing is over. I was really excited about his whole thing but now its just talked about way too much. There were other swimmers on the relay team too NBC!
I can't see how the IOC can just ignore the whole women's gymnastics situation. I realize its the host country but them ignoring it totally takes away from the integrity of the sport. You would think that is important seeing how its the OLYMPICS and all. I mean if they strip away medals for doping then why not this?
