No. We have more beaches and pools than France. Thus, we're better. Thus, our athletes win!

No. Although what did the French swimmers do to annoy everyone?

A member of the French relay team, Alain Somethingsomething made an ass of himself. It involved the words "We're going to smash the Americans. That's what we're here for." Which is arrogant and unsportsmanlike, and disrespecting not just the Americans but every other competitor.

And then old man Jason Lezak kicked his ass.

I couldn't help myself looking at those pictures and all I can say is major OW.

Shouldn't Olympic /World competition floors have some sort of standard so not to give the home country an advantage?

Hooray Australia! Is it bad that I'm stoked the Aussies won the women's relay and France didn't even medal?

No. Cause we rule! I am so happy for the girls, and very happy that the girls, after years of living in the shadow of Thorpe and Hackett, are upstaging the boys big time this Olympics.

Some people are also theorizing that the American women were overtrained and tired coming into competition and that's why they had such a hard time on the floor. They weren't feeling as energetic as they were used to so they put more energy into their tumbling and that's what made them go out of bounds.

re the wrestling thing: Holy shit, I think I'm going to be sick. Just looking at the screen caps was bad, I'm glad I didn't click on the video. At least now I'll know to run out of the room if they start to show it on tv.

After finishing fifth in the 100-meter freestyle, PHoogz has announced his retirement.

His song will live on in the hearts of everyone who has heard it, no matter how hard they try to get the damn thing out.

Doo dah, doo dah.

ETA: It pales in comparison to the weightlifter's break, but man, Hiroyuki Tomita's fall from the rings, spinning around and around to crash on his side on the mats, was scary to watch.

Count me in as one of those uncomfortable with Bela and women's gymnastics. The stories you hear border on abuse.
I'm friends of a family who's daughter trained with him. And since the dad is a psychologist, yeah, he got his kid the hell out of there.

Seriously, Bela creeped me out going on and on excitedly about the younger girls and how they are more fearless and can do more tricks. Him complaining about the Chinese is kind of funny because he use to do some dirty tricks when he was in Romania.

MichiSichi- 08-14-2008
Poor Alain Bernard in all his pictures he looks scary he has the biggest neck I have ever seen (and teeth to match).

I really want the US to start winning some more medals, now usually I don't care for countries as much as people but it just can't be that the Chinese win everything, at least track and field is coming soon.

The weightlifting video has inspired me to propose Nerf Island, where nothing is heavier than a fluffy kitten. I'll be moving there ASAP.

The gymnastics commentators really need to shut up. They say things even an eight-year-old would know is stupid. It's crazy stupid. One even had a nervous chuckle in one of their comments, and I don't think this is the kind of event where one can afford the luxury of a chuckle. It's just not appropriate when they're failing so miserably with their commentary. Even an eight-year-old knows that. You'd think after we'd complained earlier they'd at least try to prove themselves as commentators, and I just don't feel that they did that tonight. And can I just say I can't get over the fact that they're making mistakes that even a eight-year-old wouldn't? It's sick stupid.

It's pretty hard to imagine that, in any discipline, any country's athletes have been pushed harder than the Chinese athletes.

I haven't seen most of the team gymnastics (it's on in the middle of the night here), but it seems like your commentators need to get a reality check: the American women gymnasts might be brilliant, but so are pretty much all of the gymnasts competing in an Olympic final.

I agree that the Chinese athletes are probably pushed harder on a consistent basis than any other team. But I think that where the "American's were overtrained" theory come into play - consistency of training. The Chinese girls are used that intensity - they do it every day. The majority of the American girls don't normally train with the Karoly's - they go with a much less intensive program. So when they made the team, with Marta Karoly as team coach, many think that she pushed them way too hard in the few weeks leading up to the competition - causing injury and fatigue.

Not that I agree with that excuse. The Chinese gymnasts were just better - they deserved to win.
And not that that makes the commentators any less annoying. Seriously, can't they just shut up and let me watch what's happening.

If I hear Tim Dagget use the word "shocking" one more time, I'm going to throw something. Everything that goes wrong is "shocking." Someone falls? Shocking. A step out of bounds? Shocking. A smile on the sidelines? Shocking.

Dude, GET A NEW WORD. Of course, I may be a little sensitive to this because I hate the gymnastics commentators, but still. Nothing can be THAT shocking.
