I really don't want to watch the video given the reactions I'm seeing here, but I would be interested to know the nature of the injury. Yeah, I'm a weenie.
He dislocated his elbow as he was lifting, I believe. (I'm not looking either, but someone mentioned it...somewhere. Jezebel, I think.)

God. I have a hard time watching weightlifting when nothing goes wrong. It looks agonizing.
mrinsouciance- 08-13-2008
Yuck. I do remember watching an arm wrestling competition on tv when I was a kid, and one of the guys' forearms snapped in the middle of it. I still remember that so vividly, over thirty years later.

I think that's one of the reasons I didn't want to watch this footage. I had a feeling it might be something like that.

Yikes! That looks SO incredibly painful. Now I know why I've never been a fan of watching weightlifting. It just looks painful, and now it looks like it really can be.
Watching Michael Phelps win definitely doesn't get old. He seems like a decent guy in all of his interviews, and seems incredibly grateful for his success. I have no idea why I didn't like him when he competed in Athens; now I'm a big fan. I can't believe he won the gold and broke the record in the butterfly race last night and could barely see while swimming due to the water in his goggles! Amazing.
I do wish that when Phelps is on successful relays that the reporters would give his teammates some focus as well, though. We barely got a word in with Peter Vanderkaay and Ryan Lochte last night, and I don't even know the name of the other guy on the team.
I felt bad for the U.S. women's gymnastics team, especially when the camera kept focusing on their expressions when the Chinese were on floor exercise. One thing I don't understand is how all three U.S. girls went out of bounds during their floor exercise routines. Shouldn't that be an easier skill to control? It seemed like such an unnecessary mistake.

I remember why I didn't like him. He seemed like an overprivileged jerk. The pimped out Escalade didn't help any.
But...he does seem to have matured so I'm much more of a fan this time around.

You'd think, especially when immediately after them the Chinese went nowhere near the boundary lines. Course, the fact that the Chinese are clearly 11 years old and don't need to run as hard to get as much momentum to go flying through the air could also play a part.
They reran the weightlifting injury in slowmo on MSNBC. EEEK.

The pictures alone had me screaming and then telling everyone at work.
Haha, that was totally my reaction as well. "AUGGGHHH that's horrible ... Hey guys, check this out!". Poor guy.

My mom was saying that she heard somewhere that the Chinese floor mats are harder than the Americans are used to, and that's why they're making that kind of mistake--they're not sinking down on impact the way they're used to doing.

I am so disappointed for Eamon Sullivan.
Unlucky Bear- 08-13-2008
Yeah, the announcers during the men's team events said the Chinese floor is real rough. After one of the guys' floor routines (I forget who) he held up his hand and there was a gaping wound across it. So gross.
While I'm glad for the Americans swimming medals, I'm super stoked when some random country medals as well. I was cheering like an idiot when one of the women's finals was won by a swimmer from Slovenia, ancestral homeland of the Unlucky Bears.

Why do women's beach volleyball players wear bikinis?
You know in the ancient games they competed naked.
Speaking of which, I apreciate jingoism and all, but would it have killed the director to give us any close ups of the Norwegien beach vollyballers?
Count me in as one of those uncomfortable with Bela and women's gymnastics. The stories you hear border on abuse.
Every four years I a ask myself why the powers that be make us wait four years to see these sports? I would much rather watch track and swimming than baseball in the summer.

Huh, I heard the 'hard mat' reason discussed with the US men. That does make sense, if absolutely suck for the US teams.
Unlucky Bear- 08-13-2008
Hooray Australia! Is it bad that I'm stoked the Aussies won the women's relay and France didn't even medal?
