Guys, I'm in fits of laughter at my desk. A friend and I were joking about that gorgeous little girl who sang at the start of the Opening Ceremony - we thought that she looked like she'd been genetically engineered to be the Cu-*test*-('").Girl.Ever. It turns out that she was actually lip-synching, because the girl with the good voice was not cute enough!

So wrong, but so, so funny. Who tells a child 'you're too ugly with your crooked teeth, so you can't take part'?

westcoaster- 08-12-2008
It doesn't surprise me. I could tell she was lip syncing, and they usually do at these kind of events. They have at past Olympics. And the opening ceremony was all about putting on the best face for China to show the world, and that doesn't include crooked tooth kids or fatties and ugos either, by the looks of those dancing girls in the Dallas Cowboy's Cheerleader boots who clapped for two hours during the parade of nations.

Did you guys hear one of the commentators (it was one of the men) bitching about one of the Japanese gymnasts who messed up? "I don't like to see athletes laughing after they've made a mistake." (I'm paraphrasing.)

Seriously, dude? What an asshole.

Cause it's alllllll about him!

Poor thing she is the Chinese Milli Vanilli

Another thing that bugs me about gymnastics is the affected dancey moves the women do in their floor exercises.

Well, back in the old days (*settles into rocker and lays cane in lap*), women's gymnastics, especially floor exercise, was just as much about grace and choreography as it was about tumbling runs. When I took gymnastics classes (there were dinosaurs wandering around outside the gym) we had ballet instruction. The code still includes the necessity for "dance elements," I believe, even though floor exercise has become nothing but a series of tumbling passes marginally set to music. So, we get lame dance moves.

We've probably gotten to the point where the gymnastics PTB should just scrap the idea that female gymnasts need dance moves, and turn their floor ex into one like the men's - no music, and just a series of tricks and tumbling runs that use the entire floor space. You can scrap the arm movements on the beam, too, but many gymnasts use them to fill time so they're not just standing there while centering themselves for their next series of flips down the beam.

I was so happy for the US men's team last night. Shame about the mistakes on pommel horse, but getting bronze was an outstanding feat for a team with no Olympic veterans.

I am in mad crazy love with all the American gymnasts today (and 5280 loves you too, Sasha!). They were so great last night - I actually woke my husband with all my whooping during the high bar stuff, holy SHIT - and they got me all verklempt about seventeen times. (Especially the third alternate. Man.) The Chinese guys were kind of weepy too, which didn't help my own waterworks.

That ab quiz has made my week. I'm bookmarking it for rainy days.

I caught Justin Longs' routine and my heart damn near jumped out my chest.

I loved how the announcers kept saying how Sasha sucks on the pommel horse and how he was their last chance to salvage a medal and so on and so on and then he did his routine and freaking KICKED ASS. It was awesome. I was super stoked for them, they all looked so happy.

I just took some work down to our staff cafe so I could watch the three-day-eventing individual show jumping final. So exciting!!

I'm a sucker for any small country getting its first medal.

Justin Spring tothemax! Get psuedo-Prince Harry's name right!

And so glad to see Sasha finally not fuck it up! By the coverage on NBC I would have thought that there were only 3 teams on the floor last night. The germans just accidently stumbled in on pommel horse.

mrinsouciance- 08-12-2008
Heh-heh. And here I thought the guy from the Mac vs. PC commercials was an Olympic-class athlete!

tothemax- 08-12-2008
Whoopsie. And you know, now that you've pointed out that he looks like Prince Harry, preciosa, he's lost all of his hotness.

Heh - I'll look forward to you cheering with me when my gang from New Zealand finally win a medal, then! No sign of one yet, although we'll hopefully pick some up in the rowing...

NZ is usually a power in the sailing events, aren't they?
