I managed to make it all the way to the end of the ceremonies without bursting into tears too many times (I don't know why, but stuff like the Olympics always makes me overly emotional) and then NBC had to throw in the Jim McKay tribute graphic. Which set me off again. Just call me Weepy van den Boohooband.

It totally looked like a Zhang Yimou production along the lines of Hero and House of Flying Daggers--that man sure knows how to marshall an army of extras and outfit some gorgeous courtesans.

Now we finally know what a director of Zhang's caliber can think up when he's given an unlimited budget and a cast of 15,000. I wonder if he was ever told "No" when he came up with an idea. "You think we should build a globe and have people dance on it at different latitudes? No problem. We've got 1.3 billion people, I'm sure some of them can learn to dance upside down. Moveable typeface? I like it! They've got six years to learn how to synchronize their movements."

I had a few minutes this morning so I turned on the Olympics and watched the women's "clean and jerk" weightlifting competition. And I watched this tiny young woman from China lift 250+ pounds seemingly without breaking a sweat.

Color me impressed. Plus, she broke the Olympic record with her last lift. Damn.

Obviously this is a woman who will never have her purse stolen.

Watching my tivo of the opening ceremonies and Misty May just lost me forever.

Why, what happened? I didn't notice anything unusual - then again, I was on the phone with my sister when the US athletes walked in to the stadium.

jenelope- 08-09-2008
Is it because she's now Misty May-Treanor? I was so happy to see her and Kerri Walsh. They're my favorite probably gay/possibly not so gay/maybe they just like to wrap themselves around each other athletes.

I loved the opening ceremonies a lot. And the cap was my favorite part of the US uniform. I have been longing for a white Ivy cap lately. Though I'm looking at a Kangol Vent-air.

I've decided to watch as much judo, wrestling, taekwondo, fencing and shooting as I can in this Olympics, to go with my boxing. I need as much legalized assault as I can get.

I'm so pleased to have an excuse to sing his name again:

(to the tune of "Camptown Races")

Pieter van den Hoogenband, doo dah, doo dah
Pieter van den Hoogenband, ohh, doo dah day
He will swim all night,
he will swim all day
Pieter van den Hoogenband, ohh doo dah daaaaaay!

*dorks*

This is the BEST SONG EVER, darthtall! I love it! I may have to sing it when I watch him compete, too.

For anyone who didn't see it: Hungary's opening ceremony attire. The women all look like Cruella DeVil in those dresses.

All of the U.S. male gymnasts are super cute. Justin Spring looks a lot like Prince Harry. However, I had forgotten how incredibly annoying Tim Daggett's commentary is. He's like a little gnat buzzing in your ear, refusing to shut up.

I've got to say, watching the Olympics on the DVR? Totally awesome.

Scarlettfish- 08-09-2008
Oh dear, those poor Hungarians.

I am going out of my mind waiting for the swimming finals to start. START ALREADY.

I am sure that dressage is very hard to do and quite a skill, but damn it looks silly.

Dara Torres is very hot. Her body is just incredible.

I loved the opening ceremonies. I watch them every year but I end up forgetting most of it. I don't think that will happen with Beijing's.

Al Trautwig's the one I always want to stomp like a grape. Gymnastics-wise, that is.

I think Mary Carillo basically should just cover everything. That should be possible in this day and age.

Eeee! I noticed that too. He's so cute!

Also, WTG Michael Phelps!

kopernik- 08-09-2008
I think everyone at NBC would have keeled over if Michael Phelps hadn't won anything. They're all heaving sighs of relief now.

Announcer guy: GOLD MEDAL NUMBER ONE for Michael Phelps.

Uh, can we just leave it at GOLD MEDAL? Isn't that good enough for you, for a few minutes, at least, announcer guy? But maybe I'm just in a pissy mood because I've suddenly remembered how much I can't stand beach volleyball and how huge a hard-on NBC has for the sport.

Also, I thought that gymnast looked like a slightly bulkier Prince Harry, too.

BrightEyes- 08-09-2008
Yes, I'm tired of beach volleyball already and it's only the first day. And WTF at those songs they keep blasting between every time someone scores a point. I keep hearing Pink!

Also, the American men's gymnastics team? LOVE. Extra love for Raj and Sasha.

The Glen- 08-09-2008
Has anyone heard whether the Samoan boxer who was stretchered off is alright? He looked as if he got a nasty blow to the head.

MichiSichi- 08-09-2008
Great great swimming... at least I get to see a lot before I go to work but will have to TiVo the womens gymnastics which I love.
