I had a horrific dream last night. I dreamed I was seeing "In the Heights", except when I went to see it I was horribly disappointed that the only song in it I recognized was 96,000, and the rest was the plot of "Twilight" (performed by the cast of "Spring Awakening"). Damn you, Twilight. I haven't even read it!

Well, the cast of Spring Awakening is at least good
ulkis- 08-05-2008
True, Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff wouldn't be bad for the leads at all. (How much do you wanna bet someone actually will try to make a "Twilight" musical one day? Well, maybe not, considering vampire musicals seem to always fail on Broadway.)
Kiran- 08-05-2008
I feel like those two actors have more sense that that.
Speaking of how did you like Spring Awakening?
ulkis- 08-05-2008
I liked it. I still thought it was kinda weird, and I think the song, I forget the name, the "I'm gonna be your wound" one is pretty ridiculous, and if I had no knowledge about the show, I would be so. confused. as to what was going on, but I liked the songs, and I loved the kid who seduced the other boy. He was great, and the scene was so funny. And I'm sad that they took out the pirate song, because it was really good. (I know Duncan Shiek sings it as an extra on the album, but he doesn't sound as good as the cast does.) And the cast sometimes acted a bit too "Mike-Myers-in-the-Sprokets-skit".
Oh, also, I really liked the last song at the <<graveyard that the three leads sing>> but was driving me NUTS at the same time because the sentiment and the kind of corniness of the scene was totally different from how it was in the play during that scene. (I mentioned that I had to read the play for school, right? So I was a bit nit-picky before the show even came out.)

I saw the 50th anniversary revival of West Side Story at Sadlers Wells yesterday. It was rather magnificent, but then, you can't really go wrong with West Side Story - unless, as my sister later pointed out to me, you turn it into a film and miscast it horribly. It probably didn't live up to the original since, for one thing, it lacked Chita Rivera, but it's well worth seeing.

Aw, I love the film. I actually think Natalie Wood does a good job. The Tony sucks. He suck sooooo much. BUT, Chita Rivera, George Chakiras, and Russ Tamblyn totally make up for it.
spidey_88- 08-10-2008
Actually, it was Rita Moreno in the movie. And while they definitely could have cast people who could have done their own singing, I don't think it was miscast at all, but it's one of my favorite movies ever. I'm absolutely dying to see the revival when it opens on Broadway in the spring.

George Chakiris is hot, I will grant you that, but nothing can make up for the suck of the Tony.

I was watching some clips on youtube of Natalie Wood's singing. I didn't think she was bad at all, but a lot of the comments were all, "you FOOL, can't you hear that she's [insert some kind of technical singing technique that Wood was failing at apparently here]!" so I guess it was good she dubbed in the end.
I don't think Tony is THAT bad. He is a bit stiff, but Tony really just stands around and does nothing anyway.
And sometimes I wonder if the movie would've been better in black and white.

I love the film of West Side Story, and I always knew they dubbed Natalie Wood, but I was shocked to find that they'd dubbed Russ Tamblyn. I mean, he can sing! I've heard him! Tom Thumb, I believe. Grrr.
Kiran- 08-10-2008
They dubbed Rita in parts too. And shes Rita Moreno!
Anyway the "duel" between Riff and Bernardo is awesome.
evilmaidel- 08-11-2008
Oh man, that West Side Story is totally my childhood. I love how I was barely allowed to see PG movies until I was in high school yet a movie with gangs going after each other with knives was totally okay when I was ten. Because they were singing! And dancing!
My dad and I still to this day bust out with the random, "toniiiiiiiight, toniiiiiiight' anytime the word is said in our presence. Which is a lot.
Can't wait to take him and my mom to the stage revival. I love paying them back for making me the musical theater geek I am today.

I just bought my tickets for
[title of show] for September 21st! That day will be excellent, since it's the day of the
Broadway Flea Market.

Dude, that looks awesome! :grabby hands: I think I'd go more to meet the actors than to get stuff though.
