You are not doing anything that infringes on any publishing rights, okay!

indigo_kat- 06-23-2008
As if we needed any more proof that Lin-Manuel Miranda is completely awesome...

Kiran- 06-23-2008
Oh God, I want to marry him!

ulkis- 06-23-2008
You know, usually I'd be kind of annoyed at a creator who put himself in the show, but he is so freaking awesome that he can pretty much trip old ladies in the street and I'd be giggling at how awesome he is.

Is that tune from High School Musical?

Kiran- 06-24-2008
I dont mind when they can actually do the work. Like a lot of people create shows so they can get a job. Also I love Jonathan Groff.

I think its to the tune of Bet on It which is indeed a HSM track.

I think I feel that way because I'm not used to it, definitely. I know of I've heard of it once or twice but I can't remember who or what shows.

It must be weird for the actor who has to be the first to replace them or understudy them though.

ETA: Best. Stage Nishap. Ever. (Figure mostly everyone's heard of this, but it's still funny every time.)

Well, I haven't had that many mishaps happen to me (knock on wood). But the most memorable is during the first year of Wicked, when I was the standby. Norbert swung in on the rope in the fallen house scene in Act 2, delivered his line...."Let the green girl go!" But he stayed on one knee and tried to get up while keeping his legs together because he had split his pants from one end of the seam to the other. Kristin, Norbert, all the guards, the audience and myself were in hysterics. Good times! (sorry norb!)

Kiran- 06-24-2008
I love Norbert Leo Butz.

evilmaidel- 06-26-2008
I remember Norbert saying his favorite blooper was when he swung in on the rope and it got caught on Kristin's bedazzled neck brace (she was performing injured) and yanked her offstage. He said it was 'like watching Barbie get hanged'. Hee.

So I lost the lotto for In The Heights yesterday but managed to snag last minute standing room tickets for $21.50 instead. I then sat in the empty $120 rear orch seats directly in front of me for the entire show, hollaaaaaaa.

That said, do NOT buy standing room tickets for this show. There is a major mezzanine overhang that blocks a ton of the action on the higher set pieces for anyone sitting far back in the orchestra seats. I'd recommend extreme side seats closer up, or really anything in the mezzanine, over rear orch seats. They're a total ripoff.

Oh and also, Lin-Manuel was out last night. This is the kind of luck I have. That said, his understudy was good (he could sing!) but I was still missing Lin's incredible charm and presence. Plus tiny details I remember from seeing him in the off-Broadway run, and the reason why I know I'm not crazy for thinking this is because the last time I saw this show was AGES ago and yet his performance still sticks out in my mind. I must go back and see him. In non-sucky seats.

Sh-K-Boom has started sending out their Passing Strange CD's already, almost a month early! So I think I'm just going to cancel my cheapo Amazon pre-order and get mine from them. They're really good about sending stuff out quickly, plus it's free shipping.

That sucks! But at least you've seen him before. :jealous: Where theater was the show in off-Broadway?

I think the biggest rip-off seat I had was when I went to see Wicked. I had front mezzazine tickets but it's so much freaking further away than most mezzazines are. That place is like a cavern.

evilmaidel- 06-27-2008
For me the only way to see Wicked is from center orch seats. Back when I was in my Wicked fangirl phase I would spend all day in the cancellation line over at the Gershwin - the seats were $100 but damn they were worth it, because the types of people not showing up for a show last minute are totally the types of people that are going to have kickass seats. Now when I have friends or family in town that want to see it, I just check Ticketmaster like the night before the show - they always release some really good orch seats last minute and it beats standing in line for hours! Anyway yeah, I've only heard bad things about the mezzanine over at the Gershwin. For any other show, though, I'll almost always pick front mezz over anything too far to the sides or in the rear of the orch. It sucks that you had such crappy seats, were you still able to enjoy the show?

I think it was at 37 Arts, which is like way off in nowheresville but a really cute little theater once you're inside. I sat front mezz for the show off to the side and it was a great view.

As you can see I'm a bit obsessed with seating issues at shows. My favorite intermission activity is strolling around the theater and checking out the view from various spots. It's like doing homework for any future ticket buying that may take place.

Julia Murney was a surprise guest at Don't Quit Your Night Job last night and she did a little bit of Defying Gravity (but obviously with different lyrics) and now I'm kicking myself I never saw her in Wicked because damn can she sing.

Oh and also, Mary Poppins did musical madlibs and dropped the f-bomb. Good times.

Yeah. Had a good view, I was just surprised how freaking far it was. Usually when you sit in front mezzazine it's pretty close to the stage. Not the freaking Gershwin.

More In the Heights cast recording video.

Re: seats? I'm a cheapskate, so I sit wherever I can afford to sit. Some of my favorite experiences were last-row center. As long as I'm able to see and hear everything, I'm good. Although being in the rear mezz for Phantom kind of sucked because I missed a bit of the chandelier falling over the audience. My best seats ever? Fourth row for Carousel at Lincoln Center. That was spectacular.

So fucking cool.

I went to see Spring Awakening last night. I loved it and my boyfriend...well, he disliked it less than he expected to (he's not a fan of musicals at all), because of the brief female nudity. My favorite song was "Left Behind," which was less publicized than some of the biggest hits (like "Mama Who Bore Me" or "The Bitch of Living," which I also liked) because I thought it was so lovely and sad.

Interesting note for Lost fans: Blake Bashoff, who played Karl, Alex's boyfriend, was Moritz in this production, and he was pretty damn good! A more interesting note for fans of Grey's Anatomy and Spamalot: a family friend of ours was a producer for Spring Awakening and knew a lot of Broadway performers, and says that Sara Ramirez is very very gay, which I think is AWESOME.

ulkis- 07-04-2008
My sister took her boyfriend to "Movin Out". To this day I like to mention it every once in a while to seem him shudder and say "worst. experience. ever."

Sara Ramirez is pretty cool.

Funnily enough I like all the "Spring Awakening" songs that are NOT rock. I want to see it one of these days though - I have a feeling I'd like it more if I actually saw it instead of just listening to the soundtrack.
