The girl who did the Tony recap on TWoP posted a link to her Broadway blog and I read a review of it. The way she describes it it doesn't sound bad at all. Not my thing, but not as bad as the critics make it out to be.
Crybaby closing is totally expected but I saw it a couple of weeks ago (yay last minute comps!) and it actually wasn't that bad at all. The leads were forgettable but there were a couple of standout performances from some of the supporting characters. (I'm looking at you, Chris Hanke, you adorable little thing.) Plus the music and choreography was all really fun.

| And I have to say all the performances except for Grease were good. Their really is no way to even make it look up to par is there? |
Nope. The sad thing is, that performance was better than what you'd see in the actual show because the stage here was significantly bigger than the claustrophobic mess they normally have.
harvey the penguin, I'm so glad you enjoyed Xanadu! I always try telling people why it's so ridiculously amazing to see live but nobody ever believes me that a show could pull that off, given the source material. I'm like, "Hello, Cheyenne Jackson is walking around in short shorts, if you don't like the show just stare at him the whole time."
Also as WTF as Passing Strange's performance was - it is seriously the best show I've seen in a long, long time. I've loved In The Heights for ages and was rooting for it to win, but IMO Passing Strange is still better. It's just too out there to win for Best Musical.
I was actually rooting for Crybaby to be good simply because I've had a soft spot for Elizabeth Stanley since Company, and I thought the lead guy was really hot. So...yeah.
I saw Passing Strange (perfectly legally by the way) and loved it. Its weird as hell but it works. I think the performance at the Tonys suffered from the same problem that Spring Awakening did last year. As soon as people started moving the camera guy went crazy all "OOH! SOMEONES MOVING HERE! NOW HERE!" and its gives you motion sickness.
Does Stew actually say "and that's how we do it in Passing Strange" at the end of the song in the musical too?
He did it when I saw it (THROUGH PERFECTLY LEGAL MEANS).
Hee. Hee hee hee.
What I've heard is that he changes the show around, does it differently every night. Like some days he'll start singing acapella before the band kicks in, that kind of thing. Which just makes me love him more.
Stew also has the best headshot ever. I can't find it online but seriously. It's awesome.
Heh. Your just like...dont you live in Canada? How did you...fine, Legal means.
Hee, it was the caps lock that really convinced me. PERFECTLY LEGAL. Also, I'm definitely not one to judge in these matters. *shifty eyes*
I'm going to try and rush 'Saved!' tonight - it's closing soon I think, but the cast looks great (Julia Murney! Celia Keenan-Bolger!) and my friend loves it. Here's hoping they buy my PERFECTLY CURRENT Fall '06 student ID. Ahem.
Okay, so apparently "Sunrise" is the BEST SONG EVER because I have now listened to it seven times in a row. I can't get past it.
In other news, I gave some extra tickets for last night's performance of Sweeney Todd to a coworker who came back bouncing around and proclaiming it the best thing she has ever ever seen. I'm really happy she liked it - I was worried the tickets would go to someone who wouldn't appreciate it, and would think it was weird and boring and hate the music and everything. Not this girl, though (which actually surprised me, because I am a judgmental beeyotch)!
ETA:
OH MY GOD BEST THING EVERRRRRRR.OMG that is the cu-*test*-('") thing ever!
I was listening to ITH yesterday in the car for the first time and I damn near cried when I got to... that sad thing that happens after "Carnivale de Barrio."
Aw. What a dork.

I was listening to the second half of the show today and I got teary at certain parts. Granted, I'm pms-ing but still, some of the sentiments really touched me.
So, Sweeney Todd was really fantastic. An incredible staging that was almost as fun to watch as it was to listen to, and I continue to be blown away by productions like this one (and the Company revival) - I can't imgaine learning the part, the blocking, and THEN to play all the music from memory. Some talented bastards up there.
And Pirelli being played by a chick was a lot of fun. I wonder what prompted that casting when the revival was getting put together?
(Still listening to In The Heights, by the way. I'd ask for help, but I don't really want it.)
I loved that revival when I saw it in New York. Patti LuPone was robbed yo.
Les Miserables... in Washington Heights...This was from this year's Easter Bonnet competition. Robin DeJesus as Eponine and Alex Gemingnani as Mr. Softee FTW!
"I WAS IN THE MOVIE CAMP!" just literally made water come out my nose. Oh Robin, how I love you.
