Yeah, In The Heights sold me a ticket last night. I didn't really know much about it before and wasn't really interested, but they won me over.

Passing Strange, on the other hand ... well, let's just say when the number finished and they cut to David Hyde Pierce's "WTF?" face in the audience, I'm pretty sure he spoke for me, too.

In general I really enjoyed the show this year. I know some people were annoyed that they let shows that weren't nominated perform, but, honestly, that's what I watch the Tonys for so I was happy. I thought most of the performances came off pretty well, particularly Gypsy and South Pacific. I'm an old school traditionalist, though, so I expected those to be the ones I enjoyed the most. In the Heights was a pleasant surprise, and Xanadu was fun.

I watched the webcast of the pre-show awards, too, and Michael Cerveris and Julie White did a great job hosting that. Whoopi was Whoopi, and she was fine, but trying a bit too hard.

I was kinda sad that Jesse L. Martin couldnt make it out. However I LOVED how excited the audience was to see them (Daniel Evans was singing along). Marisa Tomei in particular. And Patti LuPone brought the house down. Although WTF is with Mandy Patinken's beard?

I was also happy with all the winners. And anyone who raps their acceptance speech is good people imo. And I LOVED Rufus Sewell's look of "Oh God, do they interact with you?" in the Lion King number. Also Mark Rylance might be my new favorite person.

I kinda wish there was a backstage spy cam so we could see if Raul Esparza (who I was rooting for, but Jim Norton rocks so whatever) stormed off again.

And I have to say all the performances except for Grease were good. Their really is no way to even make it look up to par is there?

I was vaguely interested, but wary of all the hype - when I first heard the songs from Spring Awakening last year, I was all, that's what the fuss is about?

Heh. I think Patti's looks during the Rent montage were rather strange. I think she was just impatient to get to the lead actress already. I can't believe it was only her second Tony; I thought she had more.

I know! I did a double-take, thinking I had missed him.

I liked the Grease number, just cause I like the song and have never heard it performed that way before, but the performers were a bit off.

So did I! I mean its Patti LuPone. I totally think she was robbed a couple of years ago though. I mean I like LaChanze, but everyone thought Fantasia outacted her in the role.

See I like the number but I thought production was sooo amateurish. The shows horrible though.

I'm assuming Jesse's still filming his Marvin Gaye movie.

Boo on Sondheim not being there (hope he's just a curmudgeon and didn't want to come), yay on Mandy Patinkin's ridiculous beard! He always makes faces that crack me up, so the first time they cut to a reaction shot it was like Christmas.

So I saw Sunday in the Park with George and Xanadu on the same day, which was pretty much as disparate of a theatre experience as you can get. But both were AMAZING. Sunday pretty much speaks for itself--great cast, brilliant show, the projections were great (at one point Real Life George poured a drink for Projection George, and the whole audience gasped.)

Xanadu was possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen. The whole audience was rolling in the aisles. Descriptions can't really do it justice, so I'll just say that there was roller skating, ridiculous Australian accents, and ELO. What more do you need?

Aw, Raul looked way more relaxed this year. The buzz is he didn't expect to win and was having a little more fun with the whole thing.

I'm so sad that Sunday got shafted but I'm happy that South Pacific best revival over Gypsy. I love Gypsy, but it got enough with all the acting awards.

Well, and really. Last year his storm-off was completely justified. When I reminded my dad a couple of weeks ago who David Hyde Pierce had beaten, his reaction was, "Well, Raul should have him killed." (He'd just seen Curtains and didn't much like DHP's performance.)

I'd Tivod, so I didn't get a chance to watch until yesterday afternoon. And then immediately went and tracked down the In The Heights soundtrack. Amazing stuff.

Kiran- 06-18-2008
I dont know, I think even if justified you got to be fricking polite, particularly when DHP gave such a gracious speech and singled him out.

However I love Raul so I wasnt that worried about it.

Cannot stop listening to In the Heights! Please send help!

ulkis- 06-18-2008
Sorry, can't help you! I think I've listened to 96,000 approximately that many time.

Also, I have a raging crush on the creator now:

I KNOW. Jesus. I hate all of you who can go see it if you so desire.

Sweeney Todd tonight! Somehow a touring show just isn't as exciting today.

spidey_88- 06-18-2008
Ooh, but the tour got good reviews, ka-*test*-('")i! Plus, live Sweeney is better than no Sweeney.

katesti- 06-18-2008
True that. An excellent point.

Also, I just saw that Cry-Baby is closing this month, but I can't find the link again. Of course.

spidey_88- 06-18-2008
It's closing on Sunday. From the early reviews, it didn't sound like it would last long.

It's okay with me though. White Christmas is scheduled to take the theater in the fall and West Side Story will go into that theater next year! I'd take both of those shows over Cry-Baby.

Kiran- 06-18-2008
I was surprised Cry-Baby got the Tony nom with the reviews it got.
