OMG I need to get those tickets NOW. Thank you!

Georgeous pics of the Broadway Bares show. NSFW.

I am so jealous of anyone who gets to see Adam and Anthony in concert together, especially since I haven't managed to see Anthony in anything. But even that's too steep for me at the moment, sigh. (And I hear that the Tamyra Gray is a good Mimi too.)

Hee! I got to see them during the OBP (thank you fave Aunt who lives in New York and your awesome 11th B-day present) and your in for a treat.

Bumping to say, That Variety is reporting that PBS is having the current revival of Company filmed for their "Great Performances" series. Awesome.

Y'all need to get your asses, if you haven't already, to see In The Heights this very second, holy crap. I just saw it last night (maybe the last performance before it switches to Broadway?) and it was amazing. I'd really only heard of Lin-Manuel Miranda because he performed a kickass version of Mona Lisa at this Broadway Loves the 80's thing I went to, but this guy is SO talented. I hope the show does well on Broadway!

In other news, Cheyenne Jackson has stepped in as the lead in Xanadu... my ass is so there. Tiny shorts! Roller skates! Glowsticks!

Just got my CD of Evil Dead: The Musical Original (Off)Broadway Recording today! It's so great.

One show I must see is The Drowsy Chaperone. It looks so cute. I'm watching/listening to Sutton Foster sing "I don't want to show off" it sounds wonderful. Is she still in the show? Probably not.

Nah. But I think Danny Glover from Smallville is there right now.

Drowsy Chaperone is closing in London in August after only two months. I did like it (but then I got really really cheap tickets) but I'm not sure I'd tell anyone to pay full WE prices for a 90 minute show. It's fun though but I thought it suffered from not actually having any good songs (on account of them all being parodies though The Boy Friend doesn't have any good songs either and that was successfully revived last year) and from the parody being rather laboured. I thought I would scream if there was another speech about the magic of the musicals.

I feel this way about a lot of the new musical comedies. For example Avenue Q is really cute and funny and I would recommend it but I didn't buy the soundtrack. I guess I'm just a dramatic pop opera song loving cheeseball. *g* (I'm the kind of person Spamalot is making fun of with 'the Song that Goes Like This.' That is the one that's making fun of love songs, right?)

My Unpopular Opinion is that I didn't rate Avenue Q at all. I'm probably not the target age group but I was disappointed at having heard how shocking it was and Not Suitable For Children to find that there wasn't anything the sligh-*test*-('") bit shocking about it at all (certainly not compared to Jerry Springer : The Opera which I did find slightly edgy). Loved Spamalot though (but then I'm old enough to have seen Holy Grail at the cinema first time round!). But then I didn't buy the Spamalot soundtrack either though I did think some of the songs quite tuneful.

Avenue Q works best for the Sesame Street generation. If you didn't grow up with that show I think the fun of Avenue Q is lost.

psammead- 07-11-2007
I think that's true to a certain extent but it's doing OK in the WE and nobody here knows Sesame Street first-hand. So that can't be all the appeal. Maybe I'm just too old to shock.

polarbear- 07-11-2007
Sesame Street was certainly around over here when I was a kid, although I don't know how popular it was. Is Avenue Q really being sold as shocking? Becuase I get the impression from the advertising that it's being sold as pretty much what it is - a deeply silly rip-off of Sesame Street for adults that nonetheless is a hell of a lot of fun (full disclosure: the soundtrack may be the most-played album on my iTunes). I think I found it funnier overall than Spamalot: some of the best things about the latter were the sections of dialogue lifted directly from the film (because the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch and "Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?" can never, ever, not be funny), but the new stuff I thought was less good (although I did like The Song That Goes Like This, and will probably buy it). I agree that Avenue Q isn't subversive at all, really, but I still found it hilarious.

Footlight.com, a website that sells cast recordings, including rare and foreign ones, is unfortunately closing down soon. They're selling things for up to 50% off, so if anyone's interested check out their selection.

I'm going to see 110 In the Shade tonight! Very tempted to stagedoor and tell Audra McDonald good luck with the Grey's spinoff (and I forgive her for stealing Francie's job) but then I remember Taye Diggs will play her ex and I'm all, "She doesn't need my luck, that bitch."
