. . .are there any? Sorry if I've missed them, but I scanned what I thought would be relative threads. I understand that any such limitations would be hard or annoying to enforce, so I totally get it. But I am in pretty much the last time zone (PST) to get the day's broadcast, and I thought I could read the thread today just about the opening ceremonies yesterday and stop before I got to today's results, and then I totally spoiled myself, thbbt.

Maybe the first person to start discussing results of the current day could note that in ALL CAPS at the start of the post? That's kind of an honor system thing. I dunno. My request would probably inconvenience a whole lot of people for my benefit, so I could also just not read the thread.

It's super tricky, I agree, because we're getting most stuff live over here (apparently CBC has nothing else to do, because it's almost around the clock Olympic coverage), and because I'm Tivoing all of it, I'm watching a lot of it before it even airs in the U.S. I'm not sure what the solution is, I'm just agreeing that it would be good to have something set up.

My two cents:

We in the PDT are already in "you have been warned" land when it comes to regular prime-time television programs, as the board is keyed to ET zone for such purposes. The Olympics are on television, so I don't see that it should be treated any differently (i.e., if it's been on in ET zone then it's fair game and no spoilers necessary).

I realize that's not exactly fair, but the normal rules aren't really fair, either. As long as things are consistent so we know what to expect, that should be the main thing.

The thing with the Olympics, though, is that it goes on all day for two weeks. It's not like a TV show that airs for an hour once a week, making it easy to stay out of the thread until it's over. The situation isn't exactly the same, but I get that "turn the volume down if you don't want to know the results" is hard to translate to a message board, so, you know. I will keep my itchy clicky finger away from the View New Posts button in that topic.

We don't have any special policy for Olympic spoilers. From the FAQ:

QUOTE
For television, we're going to go along with the common "Don't start talking about a show until it's finished airing on the East Coast in the United States" This should keep the threads from turning into "Did you see that?" "Yes, I did!" chats, and will allow us to remain blissfully unspoiled for a while. Sorry, West Coast users. If it's any comfort, it annoys the West Coast moderators, too. But it's the best compromise that we can figure. Now, this only applies to the thread of the show itself. For other threads, we ask that you refrain for three hours after the show ends, or when it stops airing on the West Coast.

Pretty much, the events mostly aren't being aired in real time for those of us in the US, so we're all in danger of being spoiled at any time.

The problem is, those of us not in the U.S. haven't got a clue when things are actually airing on the East Coast. I'm watching things live, mostly (well, live on my Tivo) and I don't think much is live in the U.S., is it?

I'm confused.

It's terribly confusing, this issue, and unfortunately, there's no logical way to spoiler the information without huge blank spaces everywhere. I think in this case, since it's time delayed the world over (except for maybe China), and the networks can parcel out when they show which events, the best policy is going to have to be to just be wary of the thread and know that you could be spoiled at any time. It's only 2 weeks.

Can we maybe at least try to mention which event you're going to talk about in your post at the beginning? That might help to avoid the worst of the spoiling.

This is clearly an internet-wide problem - you can't watch stuff on any of the websites without seeing results, as far as I can tell. I am pretty much ignoring the internet coverage and only watching on Tivo, but even then my sister sometimes sends me enthusiastic IMs about something that I haven't caught up to on my Tivo yet.
