Can a thread be started about weather or, more specifically, hurricane season? I found a natural disasters thread buried at the bottom of the Snarkfest Community section but that seems to be more for SFers who are directly affected by a natural disaster, not general discussion. I'm a big weather nerd and the first official tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season has formed (Barry) so I thought I'd see if a thread could be started relating to the topic, how it should be named, and where it should go.

Thanks!

I think there was a similar thread on FT (or maybe SF 1.0) but would people be interested in discussing their bibliomania ie why do so many of us work in libraries and still find ourselves on Abebooks or Amazon 1-Click several times a week? Plus why second-hand bookshops are so cool etc

I know it's out of season, but since there's a thread for postgrads and beyond, could we have an "Undergrad College Snarkers" thread? I know there's a few of us currently there, and we could discuss exciting things like papers to write, the absurdity of class scheduling, dorm life, how many times we've switched majors, etc.

Go for it in the Community Forum!

If a thread idea doesn't get the nod from the mods (see my and Annie's suggestions above) does that mean that nobody is interested or they are such brilliant ideas that everyone assumed we'd just go ahead and start them anyway? (though, to be honest I've now forgotten where I saw the article that inspired my suggestion!)

StephenTrendy- 06-18-2007
I'd say that generally, if a mod doesn't respond to a post in this thread, it has more to do with our busy lives than with the proposed thread content.

That said, I'd say that if it's been a week or so and none of us has addressed the thread topic, go ahead and start the topic in the appropriate area and if it's not kosher, we'll close it :)

But, in that case, will there be SEVERE CONSEQUENCE?

Would a thread about Live Earth have its own thread in music, go in the Live Music thread, or have its own thread in Television?

vwlphb- 07-05-2007
I would say it should go in the Music section. Feel free to give it its own thread.

I've been looking at the Snarker Crafts thread, and almost every post is about knitting, crocheting, or cross-stitching, none of which I do. I wanted to post about other crafts, but I wonder if it might make sense to rename that thread so that it''s reflective of what it contains (i.e. knitting etc.) and have another thread for general crafts, of whether I should just post in there?

Mods?

particle_person- 08-08-2007
I'm no mod, but I never got the sense that the thread was restricted to those kinds of crafts? I thought it was just a question of what people were working on.

spidey_88- 08-08-2007
The thread is intended for all crafts. There just seems to be a concentration of knitters that post there.

Charishawk- 08-08-2007
Well, I didn't get the sense it's restricted. It just seems that that's all that's in there.

But hey, maybe that's why I'm here! To expand the content of the thread. Heh.

Would it be overkill to start a thread for Movies of the 90s? Skyblade and I were going off on a bit of a tangent in the Bourne thread about Harrison Ford movies of the 90s, and I wanted to broaden the discussion into that bizarre 90s trend of smooth-jazzy piano music in thrillers, but that would be a complete derail.

I suppose something like that might fit in the thread This Business of Show, and I realize that Movies of the 90s would open up the floodgates for Movies of Whatever Decade, but I do think there are enough discussion possibilities to sustain them. Maybe. Let me know! If we had a Movies of the 70s thread, I'd use it to ask why I don't enjoy ANY movie from the 70s, regardless of whether it's a comedy or historical psych-thriller. I just don't. . .get them. But I like movies from every other decade.

StephenTrendy- 08-14-2007
I'd say go ahead and start it, keeping in mind though, that the topic is about movies from that decade only and trends/themes pertaining to those movies (So the Star Wars Trilogy would be off-topic and better suited to it's thread, for example). If discussion veers into other stuff, then it'll get shutdown/merged with something else more appropriate.

And actually, a better idea might be to make it about movie trends/themes across several decades, which might have more lasting conversation potential than by the decade.
