I can't help thinking of Jena Malone, she works steadily and makes good script choices and she's in the same age bracket and she fired her mom when she was what 13? She could see it even then, though I'm sure it helped to have Jodi Foster mentoring you through the morass.
I think Kirsten Dunst fired her mom a few years back too.

I dont think Natalie Portman's mom was ever her manager, same with Anna Paquin, Keira Knightley, and Christina Ricci. Of her contempararies I think Kirsten Dunst was the only one with a hardcore (if low keyer) stage mom and she fired her. I've heard that ScarJo's mom was a stage mom too but I dont know if she ever was in charge of her career.
Usher's mom manages him and shes supposed to be hardcore.
Papa Lohan accepts blame which is at least something.
