I finally saw her spin clockwise when I gave up trying and was about to close the browser window. I've vanquished yet another one of the many obstacles in my path to true happines.

Apparently I'm right-brained like whoa, and I can tell that just from reading the list of traits, if only because I'm a huuuuuuge "big picture" person, I can't do math and science at all, and I love spatial-relations games where you have to move tiles and things.

See, that would make sense and all, but it thinks I'm right-brained too.

New York City is having a Post-Disaster Housing Design Competition called What if New York City.... The site is amazingly elaborate, with a whole made-up neighborhood, "Prospect Shore" and Flash graphics showing what happens when the hypothetical hurricane hits. The creepiest part is the disaster scenario with the interactive map showing what happens to the city with fake timelines and satellite photos and fake maps.

I smell your stupid lip gloss on my lips as I'm writing this, and I am disgusted with myself for having it on my mouth. [...] You're actually average. And rude. And I feel totally abused, after only a week of knowing you. I feel bad for other guys you might do this to in the future. I'm sickened by the kiss you blew to me the night we had that wonderful date and we parted ways. I'm SICKENED by it.

That was great, Cleo. I really hope everyone gets over to Gawker and catches up on the infamous John Fitzgerald Page story. I have laughed nonstop for the last two days. The guy took douchebaggery to an artform.

I have been looking at this thing for two days (...not constantly. Off and on. I'm not weird, I swear.) and all I have ever seen is clockwise. Clockwise! I'm convinced people are making up the counter-clockwise thing to mess with me. (...maybe a little weird.)

This is hilarious, because I came across this dancer on another site last night and I was reaching murderous rage levels because EVERYONE there saw it as clockwise and I could only see it counter-clockwise. I was convinced everyone was just saying clockwise because then they got to be special right-brained people. While I am made of epic fail at math, and am apparently, according to this dancer, left-brained.

However, once I saw the link with all three, I now see her going clockwise, counter-clockwise, weaving from side to side. . .instead of making me feel better, I somehow feel WORSE. She can't be going all ways! She goes counter-clockwise, and that's it!

Actually, on the original site, I still just see her going counter-clockwise.

I'm going to give myself a stroke if I keep trying to get the dancing girl to go counter-clockwise.

Cynara- 10-12-2007
At first I could only see her clockwise, which is weird because I am soooooo left brained. Then I looked at the flash and now I can see her both ways and I can FEEL my brain make the switch each time and I'm left handed but my right thumb goes on top but I'm usually a totally logical person and I need to get off the interweb and go to bed right now.

Okay, I'm seeing a worrying tendency in this thread to take that old left brain/right brain stuff at face value. This is one of those science factoids that won't go away because it's gotten wedged into pop culture. The truth is more complicated than that.

The old left brain = logical, right brain = arty (spatial relations, etc.) thing came from some experiments back in the 60s with epileptics who'd had their hemispheres severed by an operation. The trouble is, this simple split wasn't upheld by brain imagery studies:
QUOTE
Rather, it seemed to be processing styles that distinguished the two halves. Under the scanner, language turned out to be represented on both sides of the brain, in matching areas of the cortex. Areas on the left dealt with the core aspects of speech such as grammar and word production, while aspects such as intonation and emphasis lit up the right side. In the same way, the right brain proved to be good at working with a general sense of space, while equivalent areas in the left brain fired when someone thought about objects at particular locations.

But it got even more complicated than that really quickly, and now everything is a mess. You can find out the details at the link above.

Unfortunately we don't have a "Websites that are completely fucking amazing" thread, so I'll put this here: Make Your Own Magic Eye.

Now I have to reschedule the rest of my life, due to magic-eye-creating priorities. Holy crap is that ever fun. Good find!

particle_person- 10-13-2007
I spent like half the morning with it. It is a time-suck.

Ambivert- 10-13-2007
I can't do it. I can't make the yin and yang. What's supposed to happen?

Pumpkin Cake- 10-14-2007
I've never been able to see a magic eye picture. Not now, not in the 90s, not ever. I am convinced they are an evil conspiracy everyone's in on but me.

You need to know how to view stereograms. Bring your nose close to the screen (like, an inch or two away), cross your eyes slightly, and then slowly bring your head back. At some point, the picture should snap into focus. It can require several tries if you've never done it before.

I haven't ever seen one either! I thought that knowing what I was looking for with this one (having just drawn it) would help, but no.
