| I am WAY impressed that y'all are getting to 12. I can't break 8. Africa keeps ruining me. |
Yeah, it took me a while to even get to 8. Stupid globe.

I can only dream of level ... anything, really. I freely admit, I am hopeless at geography, always have been and see no hope of changing now. I do think they might give me a little more credit when I'm at least in the right country ... though I admit, it is a little sad when I end up in completely the wrong hemisphere, as has happened a few times.
What is the Western Wall? Is it another name for the Wailing Wall (going by location)? Did I miss a memo?

I finally beat Level 10 and was so proud of myself. I suck hard at Africa, but I also keep being screwed by Australia. It's not like, say, Japan, where you don't have to really know where the city is as long as you can find the country. That shit is WIDE. I keep being, like, 1,900 miles off.
I've taken enough of the
Sheppard Software map quizzes that I'm really good at Europe, pretty good at Asia and the Middle East, and passably good at Canada. But I really don't know Africa (or Central/South America, embarrassingly enough), and I also keep being thrown off by whether a given island is off the coast of Africa, South America, or Australia. Those things are all very far away from each other, it turns out. Stupid tiny islands!
Aside from Sheppard Software, by far the biggest source I'm drawing on as far as knowing where things are is stuff I've learned from
The Amazing Race.

I have learned so, so much about geography in the last two days. Still haven't gotten past level seven, though.
Is level twelve the highest?

That game is SO addictive. I love it. One thing I hate is when it has some South Pacific island. I click on the left had side of the screen (Yes, I'm just guessing most of the time), and it shows the actual place as on the veeeeerrrry far right and it says I'm off by, like, 3,000 miles (or km, can't remember) and I'm like, "Not really!! You're doing it left to right, but the world is not a piece of paper. It circles around! I'm actually really close!" Ya understand what I'm saying?

I made that argument, too, but (a) the site can't hear me and (b) it doesn't alter the fact that when it comes to South America, or Africa, or Canada (which is much too big), I am lucky if I am in the right continent.

| I feel like those kids on "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego"-- when I get a place in South America or Africa, I'm pretty much just guessing wildly. |
When I was a nerdy 10-year-old, it was my lifelong ambition to be on that show, and especially to get to run around on the giant map. I never fulfilled my dream, though I'm sure my nerdiness would have caught up with me in the end and I would have had an asthma attack while running from Lesotho to Senegal.
Must beat level 12. Stupid tiny Pacific islands.

You know what sucks? South and Central America. Also, Southeast Asia. Stupid game. How the hell do I know where stuff in Africa is but can't find anything in China.
Also, the scale is so bizarre, I basically get credit for clicking anywhere in Europe more or less, but no credit for clicking anywhere in South America.
psammead- 11-10-2007
I have learned that 90% of Canada doesn't have any places in it. Also where Iraq is.

I like when Vancouver comes up. I can find Vancouver, simply and solely because I used to love Highlander, so I know that it's on the left-hand side and just over the US border. Also, oddly, I appear to know where Uluru is, more or less. Unfortunately, this counts for little against my habit of mixing up Africa and South America (what? They're both big, big places where I have no desire to go), and the fact that even though the Scandinavian countries are right next door to me (well, -ish), I don't know which is which.
Perhaps if my geography teacher had not been called Mr Dick I would have stood a better chance of learning something.
(Actually, truthfully? I have no recollection, in geography, of ever being shown a globe or anything to illustrate where places were - just given lists of their various gross national products to memorise.)
Also, in my defence, pretty much nowhere is now called what it used to be when I was a kid. Except the Congo, which changed to something else and then changed back again. MAKE UP YOUR MINDS!

Greenland? TWO questions about Greenland? I figure if it's a city in Greenland it should be on the coast, but still.
Also, re:South Pacific and Indian Ocean islands
If I can't even see them on the map, it shouldn't be a question.
EvilBearHunter- 11-10-2007
Well, I'm proud to no longer belong to the disgustingly large population of Americans who can't find Iraq on a map.
pamchenko- 11-10-2007
I have learned that I really really know nothing about Australian geography.

Yeah, once you get to twelve you either pass it with 60000(0?) or not. No level 13, woe.
This game is addictive. I totally did a happy dance when I got the Hermitage to within 4km. But one country that really messes me up is Brazil. Everything's on the coast (except Bananal Island, which is inland - WTF?) but that coast is so big that I can't get a lucky guess.
Stupid Brazil. Your flag is ugly. :P
psammead- 11-10-2007
Mexico seems a happening kind of country, judging by all the places it has. Unlike 90% of Russia, which seems to have no places at all except for Moscow and St Petersburg.
